Box Score Huskies Host Nationally Ranked Norwich on Friday
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Cam MacDonald (Westford, Mass.) scored a pair of first-period goals to spark a three-goal outburst and the Colby College Mules went on to post a 5-1 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at Alfond Rink.
The win was the third straight for the Mules, and improved their overall record to 10-8-0. The Huskies dropped their fifth consecutive game to fall to 3-14-4 overall.
Colby needed less than five minutes to take the lead. Rookie Joe Schuler (Webster, N.Y.) tallied his third goal of the year at 4:53 converting a set-up from senior Andrew Reis (Burlington, Ontario) and rookie Brendan Murphy (Fair Haven, N.J.).
MacDonald scored twice in a span of 2:20 midway through the period to up the Mules' advantage to 3-0.
The Huskies got on the board at 15:09 of the second period when sophomore Mark Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season off assists from rookie Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.) and sophomore Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.).
Just over three minutes later, junior Nick O'Connor (Canton, Mass.) found the net for the eighth time this season to restore the Mules' three-goal advantage.
Senior Michael Rudolf (Zug, Switzerland) scored the lone goal of third period, assisted by MacDonald and rookie Justin Grillo (Rockville, N.Y.), to give Colby a 5-1 lead.
MacDonald (2g, 1a), Grillo (3a) and Rudolf (1g) combined for three goals and four assists in the game. Colby senior goaltender Sean Lawrence (Granite Bay, Calif.) stopped 24 shots to earn his ninth win of the season.
Southern Maine rookie goalie Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) recorded 41 saves.
The Huskies play their final two home games of the regular season this weekend hosting nationally-ranked Norwich University on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Castleton University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) for a pair of New England Hockey Conference games. Colby travels to Hamilton College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) for a NESCAC game.
