Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters converted 3 of 7 power-play opportunities en route to a 7-2 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference men's ice hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The win was the second straight for the Nor'easters, lifting them above the .500 mark to 4-3-1 overall. The Huskies dropped their third consecutive game falling to 1-6-1 overall.
Southern Maine got off to a quick start taking a 1-0 lead 37 seconds into the opening period. Junior Tyler Mathieu (Stillwater Lake, N.S.) buried a feed from rookie Michael Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) to finish off a 2-on-1 for his first goal of the season. Sophomore Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the play.
The Huskies lead was short-lived as the Nor'easters scored twice in a span of 47 seconds to erase the deficit and take the lead for good. Sophomore Adam Canepa (Santa Cruz, Calif.) tied the game at 5:04 with his first goal of the season. Junior Pavel Tereshchenko (Moscow, Russia) put the home side ahead for good at 5:51. Less than four minutes later, rookie Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo.) scored to give UNE a 3-1 lead.
In the middle period, the Nor'easters took advantage of their opportunities with the man advantage scoring on 3 of 4 power plays. Junior Tucker Ross (Ashburn, Va.) potted the first power-play marker at 3:52 to increase the home side's advantage to 4-1.
Junior Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) got one back for USM at 8:32 converting a set-up from senior Patrick Magliano (Pelham, N.H.) and sophomore Tristan Dundas (Chilliwack, B.C.).
Ross scored his second power-play goal of the period at 17:10 while the Nor'easters enjoyed a two-man advantage. Rookie Brett Mecrones (Medford, Mass.) found the net 38 seconds later for UNE's third power-play goal of the period, and a 6-2 lead.
Sophomore Liam Neuman (Newmarket, Ont.) added the lone goal of the third period to account for the final tally.
UNE rookie goalie Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) earned his third win of the season stopping 36 shots. Rookie Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) made 28 saves over the first two periods before giving way to classmate Stephen D'Urso (Andover, Mass.). D'Urso, seeing his first collegiate action, made 10 saves in the final period. The Nor'easters racked up a 45-38 edge in shots on goal in the game.
Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow afternoon (3:00 p.m.) hosting Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest at the USM Ice Arena. UNE will entertain Suffolk University next Friday (7:00 p.m.) for a Commonwealth Coast Conference game.
