Box Score Williamson Knocks Down 21 Kills
GORHAM, Maine -- Paced by junior outside hitter Jess Williamson's (Goffstown, N.H.) match-high 21 kills, the University of Southern Maine women's volleyball team defeated visiting Husson University 3-1 (25-17, 25-9, 17-25, 25-8) Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improved to 8-3 overall. The Eagles dropped to 7-8 overall.
USM took the first two sets in convincing fashion. Williamson racked up five kills in the second set, and junior Robbi Termentozzi (Littleton, Colo./Central) and rookie Megan Gettings (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) had three kills apiece.
Husson grabbed the momentum to win the third set as rookie Mary Grace Power (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) and junior Nia Arranaga (San Jose, Calif.) combined for seven kills.
Southern Maine reasserted itself in the fourth set, as Williamson was nearly unstoppable at the net swinging for seven kills on eight attempts. Termentozzi added four kills on four attempts in the final set.
Williamson finished the match with a school record .704 attack percentage (21-2-27). Termentozzi had eight kills on 15 attacks, and Gettings contributed seven kills. Senior Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) passed out 24 assists, and sophomore Nicole Schmitz (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) had 15 assists. Rookie Taylor Ziska (Loveland, Colo./Mountain View) led all players with 17 digs.
Power led the Eagles with nine kills, and junior Bailey Cote (Biddeford, Maine) chipped in with six kills. Arranaga finished with five kills and a match-high six service aces. Freshman Hanna Hembrow (Milford, N.H.) had 11 assists in the first two sets before leaving with an injury. Classmate Delaney Chisholm (Tewksbury, Mass.) took over the setting duties and had 10 assists over the final two sets. Chisholm also had 11 digs to finish with a double-double.
Southern Maine is back in action on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Salem State University at the Hill Gym for a non-conference match. Husson will travel to Trinity College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) for a tri-match with Trinity and Wesleyan University.
