NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- The 15th-ranked Norwich University Cadets scored three third-period goals to take a 4-2 win over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game Friday night at Kreitzberg Arena.  The game was the conference opener for both teams.

Sophomore Cam Beecy (Stowe, Vt.) snapped a 1-1 tie at the 5:25 mark with his first collegiate goal.  Rookie Todd Jackson (Holly Springs, N.C.) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal scoring a power-play marker at 12:00 to make it 3-1.  USM junior goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) stopped the initial shot, but senior Austin Surowiec (Louisville, Ky.)  moved the rebound to Jackson, stationed to the left of the goal, who whipped a quick wrist shot into the open side.

The Huskies responded at 14:29 as senior Cole Klippenstein (Franklin, Tenn.) weaved his way through the Cadet defense and beat senior goalie Ty Reichenbach (Billings, Mont.) a power-play goal, his first goal of the season.  Shapiro and rookie Sasha Makarov (Indian Trail, N.C.) picked up the assists.

Norwich iced the game in the final minute as Surowiec tallied the Cadets' second power-play goal of the period.

After the teams played a scoreless first period, Norwich jumped on top early in the second period on a goal from junior Connor Evangelista (Wakefield, Mass.) at 2:02.  With Shapiro keeping the Huskies in the game, rookie defenseman Brendan Murphy (St. Peters, Mo.) scored his first collegiate goal at 15:54 to even the score.

Shapiro finished the game with 40 saves while Reichenbach stopped 17 shots.  The Cadets outshot the Huskies, 44-19, and converted 2 of 8 power plays.

Norwich, ranked 15th in this week's USCHO.com poll, improves to 1-0-1 overall with the win.  Southern Maine drops to 1-1-0 overall.

Southern Maine travels to Colchester, Vt., on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) to play Saint Michael's College.  Norwich hosts Daniel Webster College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
