UMass Dartmouth Battles Past Southern Maine 1-0

Box Score
GORHAM, Maine – Junior Fabio Araujo (Brockton, Mass) headed in his fifth goal of the season off of a cross from classmate Haden Cordeiro (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the 19th to lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The win is the second straight for the Corsairs who improve to 9-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Little East.  The Corsairs have won three of their last four games and are 3-1-1 in the month of October.  Southern Maine drops its fifth straight game to stand at 1-10-3 and 0-5 in the LEC.

Araujo headed the ball to the far post to score the only goal of the game and earn the game-winner as Cordeiro collected his team-leading ninth assist of the season.  The Corsairs defense made goal stand as the Corsairs earned the one-goal shutout.  Senior goalkeeper Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass./Greater New Bedford RVT) made two saves in the win.
Southern Maine sophomore goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) turned in a strong performance for the Huskies, making 10 saves.  UMass Dartmouth had a 27-8 lead in shots and a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.  The Huskies had a few chances to tally the equalizer but were unable to come up with the goal.  Junior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) had a near breakaway attempt off of an errant pass in the back line, but Carranza narrowly beat Mull to the ball.

Southern Maine hits the road for its next contest and will face Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game.  UMass Dartmouth hosts Bridgewater State on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game for its next contest.
