#6/8 Babson Shuts Out Southern Maine 5-0
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Five different players scored goals and rookie goalie Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.) stopped 13 shots as the #6/8 ranked Babson College Beavers shut out the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-0 in New England Hockey Conference action Saturday at the Babson Skating Center.
The Beavers extended their winning streak to four games with the win, and improved to 15-4-2 overall and 11-2-1 in the conference. Babson now has shut out USM in six consecutive games and extended its scoreless streak against the Huskies to 384:05. The Huskies fell to 5-15-1 overall and 2-12-0 in NEHC play.
Sophomores Paul Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) and Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored in the opening five minutes of play to stake the home side to an early 2-0 advantage. Babson piled up a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal in the period.
Babson increased its lead with three second-period goals. Rookie Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) scored at 5:50 to make it 3-0. Senior Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) netted an unassisted goal at 9:22, and classmate Max Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) closed the scoring with an unassisted power-play marker at 15:22. The Beavers continued to pour the shots on USM sophomore goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) outshooting the Huskies 15-4 in the period.
The Beavers had a 12-2 edge in shots on goal in a scoreless third period to finish the game outshooting the Huskies 40-13. Shapiro, who made a career-high 53 saves in a Friday night loss at UMass Boston, posted 35 saves.
Southern Maine returns to action with its final two regular-season home games next weekend hosting Saint Anselm College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and New England College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). Babson will play at nationally ranked Norwich University next Friday (7:00 p.m.).
