UMass Boston Blanks Southern Maine in Shortened Game

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine-University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey game came to an abrupt end 7:47 into the third period when a shot shattered a pane of the protective glass behind the USM goal.  Under rule, the game was declared official.

UMass Boston junior Peter MacIntyre (Norfolk, Mass.) fired a high shot that shattered the pane of glass behind the USM goal at 7:47 of the third period.  After approximately 30 minutes, it was determined that a suitable replacement piece of glass was not available and that the game could not continue.

The #8/#9 Beacons won their fourth straight game to improve to 18-3-1 overall and 13-2-0 in the league.  The Huskies, dropped their second straight to fall to 5-16-0 overall and 2-12-0 in league play.

Prior to the glass breaking, the Beacons had scored a pair of goals to break open a 2-0 game.  Junior Connor McStravick (Philadelphia, Pa.) converted a pass from rookie Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) at 1:06 to make it 3-0.  Senior Nick Kuhn (Holbrook, Mass.) tallied his 11th goal of the season at 3:52 off a feed from classmate Nick Milam (Westland, Mich.) after Milam forced a turnover behind the USM goal.

In a fast-paced first period, the Beacons scored the only goal with 12 seconds remaining in the period.  Junior Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) took a set-up from MacIntyre and senior Stephen Buco (North Providence, R.I.) and buried a short shot for his seventh goal of the season.

Sophomore Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) added a short-handed goal at 16:17 of the second period to make it 2-0.  McStravick and sophomore Sam Boyd (Lake Worth, Fla.) picked up the assists.

UMB junior goalie Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) stopped 23 shots to earn his first shutout of the season.  Rookie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) recorded 30 saves in the USM net.

Southern Maine is scheduled to play Babson College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).  UMass Boston travels to the University of New England on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
