Bowdoin Edges Southern Maine 3-2

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Mitch Barrington (Cambridge, Ont.) scored a power-play goal midway through the third period to give the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday evening at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was the second straight, and third in the last four games, for the Polar Bears, and improved their overall record to 3-4-1.  The Huskies dropped their third straight game to fall to 5-7-0 heading into their exam and holiday break.

Barrington took a pass from sophomore Camil Blanchet (Swanzey, N.H.) along the left-wing boards and wristed a shot from the blue line that found its way through a maze of players to beat USM sophomore goalie Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) at 9:57 snapping a 2-2 tie.  The goal was the first of the season for Barrington.

The Polar Bears made the goal stand up over the final 10 minutes to preserve the first win for rookie goalie Erik Wurman (Acton, Mass.).  Wurman, making his first career start, finished the game with 16 saves.

Southern Maine tied the game early in the third period as senior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ont.) snapped a shot from the left-wing circle past Wurman after rookie Tyler Mathieu (Stillwater Lake, N.S.) won a faceoff.  The goal was the sixth of the season for Dymock.

In the opening period, senior Todd Bannerman (Georgetown, Ont.) scored the only goal for USM.  Bannerman cleaned up the rebound of a shot by junior Cole Klippenstein (Franklin, Tenn.) that had been blocked by a Bowdoin defender.  USM had a golden opportunity to increase its lead when Bowdoin was whistled for penalty 42 seconds later, but the Huskies power play came up empty.

The Polar Bears equalized 37 seconds into the second period as junior John-Alexander Kourkoulis (Saint-Laurent, Que.) fired a shot from the right point that eluded Shapiro who was screened.  Junior Matt Sullivan (Duxbury, Mass.) won a faceoff back to Kourkoulis who fired into the traffic in front of Shapiro for his first goal of the campaign.

Bowdoin took its first lead in the game at 14:07 when rookie Sebastian Foster (Darien, Conn.) netted the rebound of sophomore Daniel McMullan's (Ridgefield, Conn.) shot.

The Polar Bears finished the game with a 23-18 advantage in shots on goal despite being out shot 10-5 in the opening period.  Shapiro registered 20 saves before being lifted for the extra attacker with 1:40 to play.

Southern Maine is off until January 5 when it travels to Colby College.  Bowdoin is back in action this weekend hosting Tufts University on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Connecticut College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) in a pair of NESCAC games.
