Southern Maine Snaps Winless Skid, Downs UNE 6-2

            BIDDEFIORD, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team scored five unanswered goals over the final two period to overcome a one-goal deficit and defeat the University of New England, 6-2, in ECAC Men's East action Friday evening at the Alfond Forum.

            The win snapped USM's 13-game winless streak (0-8-5) and gave the Huskies a sweep of the teams' regular-season series.  The Huskies improved to 5-11-5 overall and 4-8-2 in the league.  UNE slipped to 8-12-1 overall and 5-9-0 in conference play.

            Freshman Kelby Lorenz (Mississauga, Ontario) led the Huskies' goal scoring with two goals.  Junior Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) dished out three assists, and rookie Cole Klippenstein (Franklin, Tenn.) and junior Sam Guimond (Portland, Maine) each a goal and an assist.  Freshman goalie Dylan Wells (Nashville, Tenn.) picked up his fourth win of the season stopping 33 of 35 shots.

            Junior Nick Kolb (Virginia Beach, Va.) and rookie Trevor Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) scored for the Nor'easters.  Junior goalie Colby Drost (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) finished with 27 saves.

            Kolb opened the scoring at 11:03 of the first period with his fourth goal of the campaign.  Lorenz, set up by Seward, equalized for the Huskies at 13:48.  Fleurent scored his seventh marker of the season 49 seconds later to give the home side a 2-1 lead that it carried through the rest of the period.

            Klippenstein tied the game midway through the second period with his fifth marker of the season.  Less than three minutes later, Lornez lit the lamp for the second time for a 4-on-3 power-play goal to give the Huskies the lead.  Klippenstein and Seward picked up the assists.

            The Huskies power play took advantage of two more chances before the end of the period.  Guimond made it 4-2 with his first goal of the season at 15:36, set up by sophomore Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) and junior Lorne Miller (Montreal, Que.).  Sophomore Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ontario) scored the Huskies third power-play goal of the period in the final minute, assisted by Seward, to make it 5-2 after two periods.

            USM senior Jamie Osborne (Grand Lake, N.S.) netted the lone goal in the third period with 3:48 to play.  Guimond and junior Stephen Gallo (Barnstead, N.H.) picked up the assists.

            Southern Maine is back in action next Friday (7:00 p.m.) when it journeys to Boston to face the University of Massachusetts Boston.  UNE will face Babson College next Friday (7:00 p.m.).
