DANBURY, Conn. -- Freshman midfielder Vigan Pacuku (Prospect, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 49 seconds remaining in regulation time to lift the Western Connecticut State University's men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over University of Southern Maine at The WAC on Saturday afternoon.
The Colonials improve to 3-10-2 overall and are now 1-2-2 in the Little East Conference. The win snapped an 11-game winless streak (0-9-2) for the Colonials and kept alive their LEC tournament prospects. The Huskies remain winless at 0-15-1 overall and 0-5 in the LEC.
With overtime looning, Pacuku collected the pass from classmate Ignacio Alday (Bethel, Conn.) in front of the goal and drilled a shot past the Huskies' senior goalkeeper Stephen Sweatt (Scarborough, Maine). It was Pacuku's third goal of the season.
Prior to the Pacuku goal, neither Sweatt nor Western Connecticut sophomore keeper Bobby Strevel (Enfield, Conn.) were challenged despite the Colonials outshooting the Huskies, 19-8. Western Conn also had a 13-6 edge in corner kicks.
Strevel made five saves on the day while Sweatt turned away seven attempts.
Southern Maine is off until next Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to Rhode Island College for an LEC match. Western Connecticut plays host Ramapo College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
