Box Score BIDDEFORD, Maine – Freshman defenseman Alex Pompeo (Hingham, Mass.) scored a pair of third-period goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat the University of New England Nor'easters, 5-3, in ECAC Men's East hockey action Friday night at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies, and improved their record to 3-2-0 overall and in the league. The Nor'easters dropped their third consecutive decision to slip to 1-4-0 overall and in ECAC play.
The Huskies, down 3-2 after squandering a two-goal lead in the second period, got even early in the third period as sophomore Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) found the net for the second time this season.
Pompeo snapped the stalemate at 12:06 netting his first collegiate goal while the Huskies enjoyed the man advantage. Senior Jon Grandinetti (Ottawa, Ont.) and junior Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) picked up the assists on the play.
Just over five minutes later, Pompeo gave the Huskies an insurance marker with an unassisted goal.
Southern Maine built a 2-0 lead in the opening period as senior David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) scored a pair of power-play goals in the final two minutes of the period. Greene and junior Jamie Osborne (Grand Lake, N.S.) picked up assists on both goals.
The Nor'easters roared back in the second period scoring three times to take the lead. Junior Zach Lokey (Elizabethtown, Pa.) got the hosts on the board at 3:16. Sophomore Zeth Zielinski (Woonsocket, R.I.) tied the score at the 12:40 mark with a power-play marker, and classmate Nick Kolb (Virginia Beach, Va.) gave the Nor'easters the lead with a second power-play goal at 17:10.
Freshman goalie Josh Hillegas (Middleton, Wis.) earned his third win of the season for USM stopping 15 shots. Junior Ian Edwards (Linden, Mich.) stopped 24 shots for UNE.
Southern Maine will host Colby College in a non-conference game on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.). UNE will entertain Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
