BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Six different players scored and senior Richard Nerland (Calgary, Alberta) recorded a shutout as the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team continued to roll with a resounding 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening at Sidney J. Watson Arena.
The streaking Polar Bears (11-4-2), unbeaten in their last seven games (6-0-1), earned a measure of revenge for a December 6 loss to USM. The Polar Bears posted shutouts in consecutive games for the first time since February of 2006. The Huskies fell to 6-7-4 with the setback and were held scoreless for the first time this season.
Junior Robert Toczylowski (Reading, Mass.) had two goals and one assist for the Polar Bears, who also got a three-point effort (1g, 2a) from rookie Tim Coffey (Cumberland, R.I.). Nerland stopped 21 shots for Bowdoin while senior Mason St. Hilaire (Saco, Maine) made 39 saves for Southern Maine.
Bowdoin wasted little time in the opening frame as freshman Connor Quinn (Sudbury, Mass.) received a pass from Coffey and scored a breakaway goal over the glove of St. Hilaire at 2:14. Bowdoin increased its lead to 2-0 in the first period when senior Jordan Lalor (Needham. Mass.) finished off a loose puck in front of the net at 14:32. With less than a minute to play in the period, senior Erik Olson (Edina, Minn.) deflected a shot by junior Ryan Carney (Eggertsville, N.Y.) to increase the Polar Bear lead to 3-0.
Following a scoreless second frame, Bowdoin capitalized on the power play to start the third period with a booming shot from the point by junior Tim McGarry (Kennett Square, Pa.) that found the upper right corner of the net at 1:16. Bowdoin continued its offensive onslaught when Toczylowski found Coffey open on the weak side for a tap in goal at 3:26. Toczylowski rounded out the scoring with consecutive goals, first putting home a rebound at 4:10, and then tucking a shot to the upper left hand corner of the net at 13:36.
The Polar Bears will return to action at Amherst College on February 3. Southern Maine will play at Norwich this Friday (7:00 p.m.).
