Southern Maine Snaps Winless Skid, Defeats Skidmore 3-2

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) stopped 35 of 37 shots to backstop the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-2 victory over the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds in an ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) Men's East game on Senior Day at the USM Ice Arena Saturday.

The Huskies, winless since December 11, snapped their long drought to improve to 5-11-4 overall and 3-11-2 in league play.  The Huskies, who picked up three points in the standings with their tie of nationally ranked Castleton State College on Friday and the win over the Thoroughbreds, had gone 10 games (0-7-3), including five overtime affairs, without a win.

The Thoroughbreds had their five-game winning streak stopped and fall to 8-11-2 overall and 7-6-2 in the league.

Torris surrendered a pair of first-period goals to senior Alex Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and junior Nick Dupuis (Holyoke, Mass.) before slamming the door shut on the Thoroughbreds' offense.  The rookie stopper was particularly strong in the third period, making 16 saves, as the Thoroughbreds pressed for the equalizer.

Southern Maine had taken a 1-0 lead at 7:09 of the opening stanza on a power-play marker from senior Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) before Mykolenko and Dupuis scored 30 seconds apart to give the visitors the lead.

Mykolenko scored from 25 feet out in the slot, set up by sophomores Zach Menard (Burlington, Mass.) and Julian Malakorn (Warwick, R.I.).  Dupuis' goal was a power-play tally from the blue line through a screen.  Junior Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec) and rookie Chris Powers (Melrose, Mass.) had the assists.

In the middle period, the Huskies regained the lead as senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) tied the game at 12:58, set up by Conter and senior Mike Carpenter (Minot, Maine), and sophomore David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) potted the game winner at 14:45.  Rookies Mike Greene (Arvada, Colo.) and Angelo Vrachnas (St. James, N.Y.), who earned the assists on Conter's goal, picked up the helpers on the Nies' goal.

Skidmore junior goalie Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas) made 18 saves before being lifted with 1:15 to play in favor of the extra attacker.

Southern Maine hits the road for its final four games of the regular season.  USM will play at Connecticut College next Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Tufts University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).  Skidmore returns home next weekend to host Saint Michael's College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Norwich University on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
