Southern Maine Shuts Out Babson 6-0

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies received goals from six different players and sophomore goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) made 31 saves as the Huskies shut out the Babson College Beavers, 6-0, in an ECAC Men's East game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.

The win gave the Huskies a sweep of their weekend games against the University of Massachusetts Boston and Babson.  The Huskies improved to 3-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the league.  Babson, which beat the University of New England Friday night, slips to 3-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in ECAC play.  The win was the Huskies first against the Beavers since January 20, 2007.

Freshman Matt Tucceri (Kennebunk, Maine) and sophomore Troy Thibodeau (Danvers, Mass.) each scored their first goal of the season in the opening period to stake the Huskies to a 2-0 lead.  Tucceri beat Babson senior goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, Mass.) over the shoulder at 8:15.  Thibodeau made a nifty move around the outside of a Babson defenseman and lifted a shot over Peabody late in the period.

Juniors Matt MacDonald (Byfield, Mass.) and David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) scored in the opening 4:13 of the second period to chase Peabody from the game.  Freshman Ryan Seward (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) added a short-handed marker at 13:59 against sophomore goalie Dan Rivellini (Great Falls, Va.) who came on for Peabody to make it 5-0.

Freshman forward turned defenseman Stephen Gallo (Barnstead, N.H.) potted an unassisted goal for USM early in the third period to account for the final tally.

Seward and Thibodeau each finished the game with a goal and an assist while freshman Brad McGovern (Haverhill, Mass.) picked up two assists.

Torris played his best game of the season between the pipes stopping everything Babson fired his way.  The shutout was his first of the season, and the third of his career.  Peabody made 10 saves before being lifted.  Rivellini made 20 stops over the final 35:47.  USM finished with a 36-31 advantage in shots on goal.

Southern Maine will play a non-conference game against in-state rival Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) before taking a break for semester exams and the holidays.  Babson will host Curry College in a non-conference game on Thursday (7:00 p.m.).
