Buffalo State Shuts Out Southern Maine 3-0 to Win Skidmore Invitational

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Freshman goalie Kevin Carr (Unionville, Ontario) stopped all 24 shots he faced Sunday to backstop the Buffalo State College Bengals to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the championship game of the Skidmore College Invitational Hockey Tournament played at the Saratoga Springs City Rink.

The win extends the Bengals unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1), and improves their overall record to 6-2-1.  The Huskies saw their two-game unbeaten string snapped and fall to 1-3-1.

In the consolation game, host Skidmore defeated Elmira College, 4-2, behind two goals from senior Hunter Thayer (Shelburne, Vt.) and a 35-save performance in goal from junior Andrew Ross (McKinney, Texas).

Carr's shutout matched the 24-save performance turned in by BSC senior Alan Fritch (Saginaw, Mich.), who whitewashed Skidmore, 4-0, in the opening round on Saturday.  During their seven-game unbeaten string, the Bengals have surrendered only 10 goals.  The back-to-back shutouts were the first of Fritch and Carr's collegiate careers.

Freshman Bill Strakosch (Middlebury, Conn.) netted the only goal the Bengals would need as he converted at 18:57 of the first period.  Sophomores Kyle Whipple (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Daniel Andersson (Kungsbacka, Sweden) drew the assists.

The Bengals doubled their lead at 1:15 of the second period as senior Nick Petriello (St. Catherines, Ontario) lit the lamp after passes from sophomore Drew Klin (Lancaster, N.Y.) and rookie Shane Avery (Fort Covington, N.Y.).  Sophomore Trevor McKinney (Oakwood, Ontario) added an unassisted empty-net, short-handed marker with 1:31 to play in the third period to account for the final tally.

USM freshman goalie Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) finished the game making 26 saves before being pulled in favor of the extra attacker.

Named to the all-tournament team from USM were Torris and senior forward Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine), McKinney and junior defenseman Sean Murray (Burlington, Ontario) from Buffalo State, senior forward Kevin Willer (Toronto, Ontario) from Elmira, and junior defenseman Alex Essaris (Dollard-Des-Ormaux, Quebec) from Skidmore.

Southern Maine returns to league play this Friday (7:00 p.m.) hosting Middlebury College.  Buffalo State will host SUNY-Morrisville on Friday (7:00 p.m.).
