Torris, Huskies Blank Colby 3-0 for First Win

Box Score

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goaltender Braely Torris (Eckville, Alberta) stopped all 38 shots he faced as the University of Southern Maine shut out Colby College, 3-0, Tuesday night in a non-conference game at the USM Ice Arena.

The win was first of the season for the Huskies who improve to 1-2-0.  The Mules are winless on the season falling to 0-3-0.

Torris baffled the Colby shooters throughout the night to post the first shutout by a USM goaltender since Jamie Gilbert whitewashed Plymouth State University on November 25, 2008.  Torris was particularly strong in the second period when the Mules enjoyed a 16-9 advantage in shots on goal.

Southern Maine got the only goal it would need late in the opening period when sophomore Shane Harvey (Fort McMurray, Alberta) let a shot go from the right point that found its way through a maze of players and over the left shoulder of Colby senior goalie James Lemonias (Hingham, Mass.) for the first goal of his career.

Senior Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) doubled the Huskies' lead in the final minute of second period when he took a pass from sophomore David Nies (Brookline, Mass.) and lifted a backhander into the top of the net.

Freshman Mike Greene (Arvado, Colo.) added an empty-net goal, assisted by Conter and senior Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.), with 1:04 remaining in regulation to account for the final tally.

Lemonias registered 19 saves before being lifted with 2:41 to play as the Mules tried to get back into the game.  Colby held a 38-22 edge in shots on goal in the game.

Southern Maine will take on 15th ranked Elmira College on Saturday (5:00 p.m.) in a first round game of the Skidmore Invitational Tournament.  Colby will play Suffolk University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in the first day of the Bowdoin/Colby Tournament.
