PORTLAND, Maine -- Freshman Victor Ferreira (St. Michael, Portugal/New Bedford) scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute to give the visiting University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference men's soccer match Saturday night at Memorial Field.
The win improves the Corsairs record to 6-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference. The Huskies, losing for the first time in conference play, fall to 2-7-1 overall and 2-1-0 in LEC play.
With the match taking on the look of extra time, Ferreira went in one v one against USM senior goalkeeper David Kreps (Agawam, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson). The rookie was able to slip the ball to his right around the diving Kreps and calmly slotted home an eight-yard shot for his sixth goal of the campaign.
Sophomore Kellen Rauch (Ashland, Mass.) picked up the shutout in goal for the Corsairs making four saves. Kreps, who had a string of over 300 consecutive scoreless minutes snapped by the Ferreira goal, registered six saves on the night.
UMass Dartmouth piled up a 14-8 advantage in shots while Southern Maine held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Southern Maine is back in action on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) when it travels to Bates College for a non-conference match. UMass Dartmouth next plays at Emmanuel College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
