Seventh-Ranked Amherst Blanks Southern Maine 4-0

AMHERST, Mass.  --  Junior goalie Cole Anderson (Eckville, Alberta) kicked out 20 shots to post his second shutout of the season as seventh-ranked Amherst College blanked the University of Southern Maine, 4-0, in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game Saturday afternoon.

The win extends the Lord Jeffs unbeaten streak to 13 games (11-0-2), and improved their record to 14-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 in league play.  The shutout was their second straight, and third in the last five games.  The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip to 8-9-2 overall and 5-6-2 in the league.

The game was scoreless into the final minute of the second period when rookie defender Jamie Hawkrigg (Waterdown, Ontario) found the net with two seconds left to play.  Junior Joe Brock (Cumming, Georgia) and freshman Mike Moher (Toronto, Ontario) picked up the assists.

Amherst put the game away with three goals in the final five minutes of the contest.  Freshman Brandon Hew (Fresno, Calif.) scored his first collegiate goal at 15:05 to give the Lord Jeffs some breathing room.  Junior Trip Wray (Walpole, Mass.) made it 3-0 at 16:54, and Brock added a power-play goal at 18:49.

Anderson picked up his second shutout of the season stopping every USM shot.  He and freshman Nathan Corey (Anchorage, Alaska) have now combined for five shutouts on the season.

Southern Maine freshman goalie Tim Gerrish (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) played well making 20 saves.

Southern Maine seeks to snap its losing skid next Friday (7:00 p.m.) when it travels to Castleton State College for an ECAC East game.  Amherst travels to Bowdoin College on Friday (7:00 p.m.).
