Entering his second season as head coach of the University of Southern Maine Huskies’ women’s soccer team, Martyn Keen enjoyed tremendous success in his first season in charge at Hannaford Field guiding the Huskies to their third consecutive Little East Conference Championship (2022, 2023 and 2024) and third consecutive berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament (2022, 2023, and 2024).
Named the head coach of the women’s soccer program in the summer of 2024, Keen was in familiar territory with the Huskies after spending the 2023 season on the sidelines in Gorham with both the men’s and women’s program as an assistant coach – playing a critical role in developing the Husky women’s soccer program’s first-ever United Soccer Coaches All-American Bre Atwood ’25.
Taking over a program that had a combined record of 33-6-4 overall and 13-1-2 in the Little East over its first two championship seasons, Keen and the Huskies kept their foot on the throttle in 2024 finishing with a record of 15-3-3 and an unbeaten mark of 7-0-1 in the Little East, claiming the program’s third straight regular season Little East Conference title.
As the top seed and host of the 2024 LEC tournament, the Huskies posted back-to-back shutouts over VTSU-Castleton (2-0) and WestConn (3-0) to win their trophy. The back-to-back shutouts marked the ninth and 10th shutouts of the season for Southern Maine.
The Huskies offense also continued to succeed setting the program record for Goals in a Season with 73 as Southern Maine outscored its opponents 73-19 in 2024, averaging 3.48 goals per game.
At the conclusion of Keen’s first season, the Huskies had four United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections: Catriona Gould ’25, Mia Sargent ’25, Julia McKenna ’24 and Kiki Huntress ’25. Nine Huskies earned All-Little East Conference honors, including Sargent the three-time Defensive Player of the Year. Joining Sargent were Gould, McKenna, Huntress, Hunter Stonebraker ’25, juniors Devan Sherry and Cierra Hill, and first years Meghan Przybilla and Makyla Magid.
Prior to joining the Huskies’ staff, Keen spent four years as an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach with the Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) men’s team, helping guide the program to a GNAC title in 2021. A veteran coach with ties to Maine club and college soccer as well as years of experience at the international level, Keen has served as the Director of Coaching at Seacoast United Maine with duties including college placement for athletes, establishing performance metrics, and coaching mentorship. Keen also worked in the Cumberland/North Yarmouth Maine School Administrative District from 1996 through 2006 as an educator and served as the NYA boys’ head coach, leading the team to a State Championship in 2018.
A native of North Wales in the United Kingdom, Keen enjoyed success playing in the Welsh Football League system before pursuing his higher education degrees. Keen earned his bachelor’s degree in Education Studies from the University of Staffordshire (United Kingdom) in 1983, and went on to earn a Master of Science in Sports Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 2006, and a Certification in Exercise Physiology from the American College of Sports Medicine in 2007.
