One of the most respected and heralded coaches in Maineschoolboy history, Dave Poulin joins the Southern Maine coachingstaff after a tremendous coaching career at Winthrop HighSchool.

 

Poulin led his teams at Winthrop to two Class C StateChampionships in 1992 and 1993, and has coached several standoutplayers, including the 1996 Maine Mr. Basketball, T.J. Caouette,who went on to play at Villanova University.

 

A 1973 graduate of the University of Maine, Poulin has taughtsocial studies at Winthrop High School for 40 years. His classesare taught with the same passion he displays as a coach. A winnerof numerous coach of the year awards, Poulin’s Winthrop teamswon 327 games in 22 seasons (15 wins per season), and qualified forpostseason play a staggering 21 of those 22 seasons.

 

The style of play that describes his teams can be characterizedby one word: defense.

 

Poulin’s dedication to coaching basketball was recognizedwhen he was inducted into the inaugural class of the KennebecValley YMCA for Coaching Achievement and Contribution to areayouth.

 

Since 1998, Poulin has been co-owner and director of Maine GoldRush Team Camps, which has served teams in Canada and throughoutNew England.

 

“Dave’s credibility in all circles of Mainebasketball is extraordinary as he is consistently being consultedby high school programs and coaches looking to catch some of thesuccess and leadership perspective which his continues topossess,” USM Head Coach Karl Henrickson said. “Thefact that his teams at Winthrop High School continually competedand were always a threat to win it all, speaks to his knowledge andleadership.

 

“His contributions to our program are immeasurable andappreciated. He is a winner,” Henrickson said.

 

Dave and his wife Lisa Poulin have four children, Dave, Mike(currently a senior and three-year captain on the USM men’sbasketball team), Sam, and Katie, and reside in Readfield,Maine.
