David Chadbourne

A veteran in the coaching ranks with more than 25 years of experience as a head coach, David Chadbourne took over the University of Southern Maine women’s basketball program during the 2023-2024 season.  In two seasons as the Huskies’ leader, Chadbourne has amassed an overall record of 31-24, and a 22-10 mark in the Little East Conference.

After a strong first season (2023-2024), guiding Southern Maine to a 13-14 record (10-6 in conference play) and the No. 3 seed in the Little East Conference tournament (after being picked to finish sixth in preseason polls). Chadbourne continued to build off of the team’s success for a breakout 2024-2025 season.

Chadbourne and the Huskies battled to an 18-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in Little East Conference action – including a senior-day upset over nationally-ranked UMass Dartmouth. Claiming the third seed for the 2025 LEC women's basketball championship tournament, the Huskies advanced to the championship game of the tournament for the first time since the 2014 season, making their conference-record 27th appearance all-time.

Chadbourne was named the LEC Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season, while freshman Lucy Wiles was named the Little East Conference, Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, New England Women’s Basketball Association, and D3hoops.com Region 2 Rookie of the Year. Graduate student Liz Cote earned All-LEC honors while first-year Dakota Shipley earned All-MWBCA honors.

Arriving in Gorham after two decades of coaching at Franklin Pierce University (NCAA Division II), Chadbourne led the Ravens men’s basketball team from 1999-2023, departing the program as the all-time leader in wins.  During his time as the men’s head coach at FPU, Chadbourne led Franklin Peirce to the postseason in 18 of his 24 seasons, earning Northeast 10 Coach of the Year honors in 2021-2022 after leading his team to the NE10 Championship.

Prior to his role as men's basketball coach at Franklin Pierce, Chadbourne led the Ravens' women's basketball program for three seasons (1996-1999), posting an overall record of 63-44 (.724) and a 44-6 (.880) record against conference opponents, finishing as champions of the NECC in 97-98, and 98-99.

A tireless recruiter, Chadbourne coached more than 30 All-Northeast 10 selections, six Daktronics, and seven National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-Region honorees.  Chadbourne also has had a breadth of experience in Athletic Administrative roles.

Before his roles at Franklin Pierce, Chadbourne was an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Joseph's College (Maine).  A two-sport standout for the Monks (basketball, baseball), Chadbourne was inducted into the Saint Joseph's College Athletics Hall of Fame.
