Joining the University of Southern Maine men's lacrosse coaching staff in the spring of 2011 as an assistant coach, Sam Lane begins his seventh season as head coach. He was named head coach in September 2011 succeeding Malcolm Chase. Lane's primary responsibilities on the field during the season were working with the offense and face-off units.
During his six seasons as the Huskies' head coach, Lane has amassed a 33-58 record and guided his teams to three trips to the Little East Conference tournament. Six individuals have earned All-LEC honors, and two - Dylan Kenney (2013) and Sam Hornblower (2016, 2017) - have been named LEC Defensive Player of the Year.
In his first season (2012) at the helm, Lane guided the Huskies to a 6-10 overall record and a berth in the Little East Conference tournament. The following season, Lane led the Huskies to a 5-11 mark, and Kenney was named the LEC Defensive Player of the Year. Kenney, attack Kyle Baker, middie Mark White and long-stick middie Chris Roop were all named to the All-Little East first or second team.
An honorable mention All-Centennial Conference pick in 2006, Lane played three seasons (2003, 2004 and 2006) at Washington College (Chestertown, Md.). In 2006, Lane scored 33 goals, had six assists and picked up 26 ground balls in 19 games. During his three seasons, Lane played on one Centennial Conference championship team (2003) and three NCAA tournament teams. The 2004 team reached the NCAA semifinals, and the 2006 squad made it to the quarterfinal round.
Prior to moving to Maine, Lane managed Fleischer Sport Ski Shop in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Working alongside former University of North Caroline All-American Neill Redfern, Lane was instrumental in the growth of the Steamboat Springs Youth and High School lacrosse programs.
