Cole Johnson & Alex Graver Score for Huskies

GORHAM, Maine  - Cody Robinson scored twice in a two-minute span in the first half, and T'Syi Showers and Andrew Hodgins each had a second-half goal to lead the Thomas College Terriers to a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field.

Southern Maine senior Cole Johnson (Orange, Mass./Ralph C Mahar) scored his second goal of the season in the fifth minute, and junior Alex Graver (Freeport, Mass.) recorded his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the loss for the Huskies.

The Records:
Thomas College (5-2)
Southern Maine (2-3-3)

Today marked the 56th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Thomas College Terriers.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 29-20-7.  The Terriers have won the last four games consecutively however.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine started off on the front foot as Johnson had an outstanding finishing to the near post in the fifth minute following a strong ball in from senior Nathan Brown (Palo Alto, Calif.) for an early 1-0 Husky lead.
  • The Terriers tied it up in the 13th minute when Robinson scored his first goal of the game.  Robinson put his team ahead 2-1 minutes later heading in an assist from David Ivarsson.
  • After three goals in the opening 15 minutes neither side broke through for another score keeping the game in favor of the Terriers 2-1 at the halftime break. Husky senior Nick Mauro (York, Maine) had a bid in the closing moments but his shot slipped just left of the net.
  • Junior Martin Kelly (Portland, Maine) nearly had the equalizer at 54:00, but his attempt hit off the cross bar. The Huskies held play for the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Thomas' T'Syi Showers made it 3-1 in the 61st minutes scoring against the run of play with his first goal of the season.
  • In the 63rd, Graver returned the Huskies to a one-goal deficit heading in USM's second goal of the game. After a Thomas foul was conceded, senior Jack Brady (Stuart, Fla.) sent in a well-placed service onto the head of junior Connor LeClerc (Windham, Maine) who flick the ball onto Graver for the tally.
  • USM nearly tied it up a gain in the 68th minute when a long-range attempt from freshman Alessandro Ferrero (Montreal, Quebec/Proctor Academy) sailed off the cross bar. The Huskies nearly had the same result in the 72nd but senior Exauce Lenge (Portland, Maine) had his shot deflect off of the post.
  • Thomas was able to seal the game in the 79th minute as Andrew Hodgins cleaned up a loose ball in the box after a corner kick for the 4-2 final.
