Huskies Explode for 23 Runs Behind Anquillare's Record-Tying Three-Home Run Game in Win Over Plymouth State
PLYMOUTH, NH - The No. 28 University of Southern Maine Huskies exploded for a dominant offensive performance Tuesday afternoon, defeating Plymouth State Panthers 23–5 in a home run-filled matchup in Little East Conference baseball action at Parish Field.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 22–6 overall and 10–1 in conference play, while Plymouth State falls to 3–21 (2-9 LEC).
Junior
Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-6 with a single-game record-tying nine RBI. Anquillare belted out three home runs in the contest, finishing a solo home run shy of the elusive home run cycle. Anquillare started his onslaught with a two-run shot in the third, and then connected on his second grand slam of the season with a four-run homer in the fourth. How It Happened :
The Huskies' offense wasted no time getting started, putting together another 20-plus run performance with 23 runs over seven innings. Sophomore
Drew Scialdone (Amesbury, Mass.) opened the scoring with an RBI single to bring home senior
Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/ Cony), who later helped fuel the surge with a two-run home run in the second inning.
However, it was junior
Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) who delivered a historic performance at the plate. Anquillare blasted three home runs, tying the program record for most home runs in a single game, and matched another school record with nine RBIs. All nine of his RBIs came via home runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning. With the performance, Anquillare becomes just the sixth player in program history to hit three home runs in a game.
Southern Maine saw contributions throughout the lineup, with nine different players recording RBIs in the offensive outburst.
On the mound, junior
Carson Black (Porter, Maine / Sacopee Valley) earned the win, tossing five innings while striking out five batters. The victory improves Black's record to a perfect 6–0 on the season
For the Panthers, Plymouth State was led offensively by Sam Salvi, who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs. Brayden Michaelson added a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs.
Jack Gintof was tagged with the loss on the mound for the Panthers.
