Endicott Pulls Away Late From Huskies in Non-Conference Game

GORHAM, Maine   - Trevor Kamuda, Brady Rickenbach and Cade Bernardo each had two RBI in the top of the ninth as the No. 27 Endicott College Gulls scored 10 runs to break open a one-run game and defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 21-10 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening at Ed Flaherty Field.

The Huskies' loss to the Gulls is the first of the season at home for Southern Maine who is now 9-1 at Ed Flaherty Field, and 19-6 overall. Endicott is now 19-7.

The Huskies trailed 6-1 after the top of the fifth, but rallied with nine runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to make it a one-run game, 11-10, before the Gulls recorded a crooked number in the ninth.

How It Happened :
  • Throwing a bull-pen day, Southern Maine used 13 pitchers in the contest.  Sophomore Riley O'Brien (Woodstock, Conn./Woodstock Academy) took the loss as the starter. He pitched one inning allowing two hits and an earned run.
  • Endicott starter Jeremy Krendel fired 4.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  Ben Gill earned the win pitching the eighth inning allowing one hit, and picking up a strikeout.
  • Benardo and Brenden Walsh each finished with four RBI for the Gulls, while Brady Rickenbach and Trevor Kamuda each had three.  The Gulls had 16 hits off of the Huskies' battery led by three each from Kamuda, TJ Liponis, and John Fusco.  Endicott had six of its 16 hits in the ninth inning.
  • Senior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI in the contest, including a three-run home run in the sixth for his seventh home run of the season. Junior Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) had two RBI. Junior Carter Higgins (Truro, Nova Scotia) and sophomore Drew Scialdone (Amesbury, Mass) both had two hits, including a double.
  • Trailing 11-5 after Walsh's four-run home run in the top of the sixth, Southern Maine rallied for four runs to make it an 11-9 game.  Senior Dylan Firmin (Stratham, NH) started the rally with a two-out solo home run to left field before Douin knocked in three runs with a homer over the 406 mark in right.
  • In the seventh, Southern Maine made it a one-run game, 11-10 on a double to left from Scialdone. Scialdon's double drove in Higgins, who reached safely with a single to left.
  • In the top of the eighth, Husky senior Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) fired a solid inning working around a two-out walk to get Walsh swinging to end the inning.  In the Huskies' half of the inning, Douin laced a single up the middle on two outs and moved up to second on a wild pitch, but was unable to score the tying run as Gill got the final out with a swinging strikeout.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Gulls used two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases before Kamuda and Richenbach went for back-to-back doubles and four runs for a 15-10 lead. From there, the Gulls collected four more hits and four more walks for the lopsided final.
