Big Hits Lead Southern Maine Past Bates 10-5

Vacchiano Blasts First Inning Grand Slam

GORHAM, Maine   – Sophomore Caleb Vacchiano (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) had a first-inning grand slam and finished with five RBI to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 10-5 win over the Bates College Bobcats in a non-conference baseball game Monday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

The Huskies connected on 12 hits, and scored seven of their 10 runs in the first two innings en route to the win. Junior Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.) finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, including the go-ahead solo home run RBI in the first. Juniors Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) and Evan Baschnagel (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) and senior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) each had two hits, while Baschnagel and Keblinsky each had an RBI.

Bates' Henry Price had four RBI on a first-inning grand slam. Keagan Ryan was the only Bates' hitter to have more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

How It Happened :
  •  Bates got off to a strong start as Henry Prince knocked a one-out grand slam over the left field fence for an early 4-0 lead for the Bobcats.  Bates loaded the bases as Keagan Ryan led off and was hit-by-a pitch, and Jack Margiloff drew a four-pitch walk.  After a line out, David Swift ran the count full before loading the bases with a walk to set the table for Prince's second home run of the season. USM freshman Hayden Strout (Charleston, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) settled in after the grand slam getting the final two outs.
  • Southern Maine wasted little time fighting back, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning, including a Husky grand slam from sophomore Caleb Vacchiano (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley). Junior Evan Baschnagel (Garden City, NY/Chaminade) led off with a single through the left side before senior Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and junior Peter Keblinsky (Ellsworth, Maine) loaded the bases with a walk and a single respectively. Vacchiano's third home run of the season came on a full count and tied the game at 4-4.  After a fly out, Southern Maine went ahead 5-4 and kept the lead for good on a solo home run to the gap in left from junior Mike Anquillare (North Haven, Conn.).
  • Strout settled in after the first and kept the Bobcats off the board through his next five innings of work, allowing just one more hit, a second inning single, and striking out six.  Strout had 1-2-3 innings in the third and fifth with two strikeouts each.
  • Southern Maine led 7-4 after the second on an RBI single up the middle from Keblinksy, and an RBI walk from junior Quinn Dillon (Gorham, Maine).
  • Bowdoin cut into the Huskies' lead scoring a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly RBI from Gibby Sullivan to trail 7-5, but the Huskies answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Vacchiano earned his fifth RBI of the game on a fielder's choice play, while Keblinsky made it 9-5 scoring on a strong running play as Vacchiano bought time in a run-down.
  • Bates threatened for runs in the top eighth advancing a runner to third, but Husky reliever senior Kyle Skolfield (Gorham, Maine) ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts. USM scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth.  Anquillare led off the inning with a single through the left side before coming around to score on an RBI single to left from Baschnagle for a 10-5 lead. Husky freshman Kason Lewis (South Portland, Maine) closed the game.  After giving up a lead off single, Lewis fired back for three consecutive outs, including a pair of looking strikeouts for the final.

GAME NOTES:
  • Per reaching NCAA records, it is believed today's game marks the third time in NCAA Division III history that two teams have connected on grand slams in the same game, and just the second time that two teams have had a grand slam in the same inning: Muhlenberg (1) vs. Wilkes (1) March 29, 1998 (grand slams in different innings), and Luther (1) vs. Upper Iowa (1) April 26, 1992 (grand slams in same inning).
Up Next:
