Huskies Come Up Short Against Terriers 12-7

GORHAM, Maine – Nicholas Pike led all players with four goals and Owen Lyons had a hat trick for the Thomas College Terriers on Wednesday evening in a 12-7 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team. Juniors Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) and Adam Coley (Valencia, Cail./Cheshire) each scored twice for the Huskies. Gaulrapp also assisted on two goals.
 
Hunter Simpson also had four points for Thomas on two goals and two assists. Jack Morrill scored twice for the Terriers in addition to going 11-for-15 on faceoffs with 10 ground balls.
 
Sophomore Zach Smith (Waterbury, Vt./Harwood Union) scored a goal and had an assist. The Huskies also had goals from sophomore Finn McCarthy (Durham, Maine/Freeport) and senior Rhys Bridges (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee).
 
Junior Brycen Wolfahrt (Biddeford, Maine) set a new career-high for saves in 19.

Series History:
Today was the 11th game between Southern Maine and Thomas and the first win for the Terriers in the series.
 
The Goaltenders:
Thomas: Mike Picard (5-2), 60:00, seven goals allowed, 10 saves
Southern Maine: Brycen Wolfahrt (1-5), 60:00,12 goals allowed, 19 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • Thomas scored 39 seconds into the game on a strike by Simpson. Coley tied the game at 1-1 with just under nine minutes to go in the quarter before the Terriers went on a 3-0 run to take a 4-1 lead. Pike recorded two of those goals with Morrill scoring the other one. A goal by Smith made the score 4-2 heading into the second quarter.
  • An up goal by Owen Lyons and another score by Morrill extended the Thomas led to 6-2. The Huskies then added an up goal of their own by Bridges from Gaulrapp before the Terriers made the lead 7-3 entering halftime with Pike's third goal of the game.
  • Gaulrapp scored twice in the first two minutes of the new half to get the Huskies within two goals at 7-5. Smith assisted on the second goal. Another goal by Pike put the Thomas lead back at three goals before a goal by McCarthy from freshman Tim Caouette (South Portland, Maine) made the score 8-6. Thomas outscored the Huskies 2-1 over the final five plus minutes with Wyatt Lyons and Owen Lyons scoring the goals. The Huskies' goal came from Coley with an assist by Gaulrapp.
  • Thomas scored twice in the final quarter for the 12-7 final. Simpson scored the first goal before dishing out an assist to Owen Lyons.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Terriers had a 31-17 lead in shots on goal and led 14-22 in faceoffs.
  • Thomas led 40-28 in ground balls.
  • Freshman Charles Kennedy (Windham, Maine) went 5-for-11 on faceoffs with a team-high six ground balls.
  • Smith and junior Lucas Rego (Dracut, Mass./Lowell Catholic) each caused multiple turnovers.
