Today's game marked the 44th meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. UMass Boston leads the overall series 26-15-3. Southern Maine's win over UMB is the first in 13 contests. Southern Maine last defeated UMB, 1-0, on September 29, 2012 in Gorham. The win is the Huskies first win over UMB in Boston since a 2-1 result in 2007. Last season, the Huskies battled UMass Boston to a 2-2 draw.
How It Happened:
- Southern Maine opened the scoring in the first 15 minutes. After earning a corner kick, Husky senior Ahmed Al Mshakheel (Baghdad, Iraq/Biddeford) served in a well-placed and lofted service to Johnson who struck for his fifth goal of the season with a shot to the lower right of the net in the 13th minute.
- The Huskies doubled-up their lead in the 22nd minute off the foot of Graver. Southern Maine earned a free kick, and Graver hit a howler from 28-yards out whipping the ball in to the upper left corner for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
- The Beacons halved the lead late in the opening half as Eduardo Chairico headed in a score on an assist from Parker Hamilton in the 43rd minute.
- Boston pressed for an equalizer to start the second half, putting the first shot towards goal of the second stanza in the 54th from John Arruda. Husky goalkeeper Wagner came up huge in the 56th when UMB was awarded a penalty shot. Beacon's Ryan Lima stepped to the spot and hit a strong shot to the left, but Wagner made the stop to keep the game at 2-1.
- The Beacons continued to search for an equalizer. Arruda unleashed a powerful strike in the 78th, but Wagner pushed it away for a corner and then made the clear on the Beacons' service with a diving punch. The Beacons outshot Southern Maine 7-4 in the second half, but Wagner's performance in net kept the Huskies' ahead for the win.
