Southern Maine Falls to UNE 1-0 in Overtime in Season Opener

GORHAM, Maine – Lucey Jean scored 1:12 into overtime to give the University of New England Nor'easters a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies on Friday evening in a non-conference women's ice hockey game. The game-winning goal came just after a shot by sophomore Charlotte Hughes (Mississauga, Ontario) hit the pipe on a scoring chance.

The Huskies outshot the Nor'easters, 25-18, in a game that featured strong goalie play by both UNE's Kyleigh Matola and Southern Maine's Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy).

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine outshot the Nor'easters 12-5 in the opening period but could not score. The Huskies put three shots on goal during their lone power play of the game.
  • Neither team scored in the second period as the Huskies led 8-3 in shots on goal.
  • The Nor'easters had a power play chance later in the third period, but Jones denied both shots that found their way to goal.
  • Matola stopped a shot by sophomore Gracelyn Koch (Maple Grove, New Brunswick) off a good set up by freshman Madeleine Wopling (Gatineau, Quebec) 14 seconds into overtime on the first scoring chance of the period. After the Nor'easters transitioned to offense, Hughes blocked a shot which set up a breakaway for Koch. Koch found a crashing Hughes but her shot hit off the pipe. Amanda Forziati then took the puck down the ice and Jean cleaned up her loose puck for the game-winning goal.
