HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In a closely played first quarter, both teams combined for three total shots. Townsend gave USM the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute off of an assist from sophomore Eliza Rogers (Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic).
- Despite outshooting the Warriors 6-1 in the second quarter, and holding a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners, Southern Maine found itself tied at the break 1-1. ECSU's Audrey Molin scored an unassisted goal in the 19th minute on the Warriors second shot of the game and only shot of the half.
- After an uneventful third, the Warriors controlled momentum in the fourth outshooting USM 5-3. Husky freshman Haley Romasco (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) made four of her five saves in the fourth quarter, keeping the game level and helping to force overtime.
- The Warriors kept the pressure on the first overtime, outpacing the Huskies in shots 5-3, and 1-0 in penalty corners. However, Romasco stopped the lone Warrior goal on target to set up double overtime.
- Townsend rocketed in her shot to the far post for the game winner less than 90 seconds into the second overtime period. Husky freshman Lizalynn Boudreau (Freeport, Maine) did an excellent job carrying the ball up the left side of the field and then sending the ball in to the circle. After controlling the pass and making a pair of moves to evade Warrior defense, Townsend unleashed a driven shot for the game-winner.
