The Records:
VTSU-Castleton (2-11, 0-6 Little East)
Southern Maine (7-6-2, 3-2-1 Little East)
Today's game marked 10th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and VTSU-Castleton Spartans. The Huskies have won the last seven consecutively and lead the overall series 8-2. Southern Maine has outscored the Spartans 23-3 over the last seven meetings.
How It Happened:
- Dominating possession and offensive statistics, Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute. Freshman Charley Baillie (Severna Park, Md.) carried the ball down the left side and sent in a productive cross near the top of the box. A stuttered Castleton clearance had the ball bouncing in front of Ingles who hit a well struck chip over the top of the keeper and into the upper side of the net for the score. The Huskies added six more shots in the half, including an attempt from freshman Lizzy Neal (Parker, Colo./Lutheran) that glanced off the cross bar in the 39th minute. USM finished the half up 13-4 in shots and 1-0 on the scoreboard.
- The Huskies continued to pressure the Spartans to start the second half, and another effort off the cross bar and a goal-line clearance on the follow up from Ingles kept the game at 1-0 in the 52nd minute.
- Southern Maine doubled its lead in the 69th minute when Morin passed off to Ingles for her second goal of the game. Scrambling to win the ball on the right side, Morin poked the ball more centrally to Ingles who finished to the far post.
- Sophomore Olivia Locke (Mapleton, Maine/Presque Isle) made it 3-0 in the 85th minute. Making the eighth appearance of her career and being subbed on at 80, Locke tapped in a near-post goal – the first of her career – after senior Elizabeth Talbot (Windham, Maine) sent a through ball to sophomore Marie Benoit (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) who hit a one-time square ball in front of the net to set up Locke.
