GORHAM, Maine – Freshman
Kate Hester (Austin, Texas) scored the game-winning goal in the 51
st minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the Rivier University Raiders in a non-conference women's soccer game Thursday night at Hannaford Field.
Junior
Kaylee Vasiloff (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) earned the shutout making four saves, including a critical diving stop in the second half. The Huskies are the first team to shutout the Raiders this season, snapping Rivier's seven-game win streak. The Raiders entered the contest averaging 3.44 goals per game.
The Records:
Rivier College (7-2-1)
Southern Maine (5-4-1)
Facing each other for just the second time in series history, Southern Maine won the first meeting in 2025, 5-4, on August 29. USM is now 2-0 all-time against the Raiders. The Huskies win snapped a seven-game win streak for Rivier.
How It Happened:
- Despite outshooting Rivier 8-2 in the opening half, the Huskies were tied with the Raiders 0-0 at the halftime break. USM freshman Emily Phillip (Baie-d'Urfé, Quebec/Beaconsfield) tested Rivier goalkeeper Olivia Rosario early in the 13th minute but Rosario made one of her five saves in the game to keep it level.
- USM opened the second half pressing high, and after an early off side goal, the Huskies were break-through for the game-winner. Playing up the left side of the field, sophomore Lexi Morin (Brunswick, Maine) was able to hold the ball and slot it forward into the box onto Hester's foot. Hester made a neat finish for the 1-0 Husky lead in the 51st.
- Morin nearly made it 2-0 twice in the second half with a header just wide in the 71st and a point-blank save from Rosario in the 76th.
- Rivier's Cadance Ryan had an attempt cleared off the line by USM sophomore Ava Walsh (East Granby, Conn./East Granby). Vasiloff made a strong defense play on a service but tumbled in the mix of players and Ryan pounced on the ball sending a shot to the left corner, but Walsh's clearance kept it 1-0 in the 82nd. Vasiloff made her final save of the game in the 84th, and Southern Maine managed the game from there for the win.
