Pilgrims Score Twice in Third Period to Sneak Past Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine – The New England College Pilgrims had goals from Alexis Hornsby and Molly Jones in the third period to overcome a 1-0 deficit and defeat the University of Southern Maine Huskies on Friday evening in Little East Conference women's ice hockey action. Mae Lafferty and Jordan Pond each assisted on both goals. The Huskies' goal came from senior Audrey Donahue (Timberlea, Nova Scotia/Kimball Union Academy) in the second period from sophomore Sophia Capone (Cumberland, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey School).

Freshman goalie Megan Gawley (Calgary, Alberta) made her first career appearance in net and stopped 13 shots in her collegiate debut.

How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine outshot the Pilgrims 17-2 in the first period, but the period ended with the teams still tied at 0-0 thanks to a strong effort in net by Lallier Whissell.
  • Donahue scored her third goal of the season off the rebound of Capone's shot 10:43 into the second period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Gawley made six saves in the period, while NEC killed two penalties to keep the deficit at 1-0 heading into the third.
  • The Pilgrims tied the game 7:35 into the third period when they pulled their goalie on a delayed penalty and scored just as a previous penalty was expiring for the Huskies. The visitors then took the lead with 5:45 left on a goal by Jones off the rebound of a shot by Pond. Lallier Whissell then made six saves the rest of the way to secure the win for the Pilgrims.
