HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Scoring the first eight points of the game on buckets from graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennet), Wiles and Christopher, Southern Maine built up a 25-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. Christopher scored 14 of her 23 points in the opening frame shooting 6-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-2 from three.
- RIC found its offensive feet in the second quarter and used a 9-0 run in the first three minutes to cut its deficit to six, 25-19. Wager had four points in the run. Scoreless to start the second quarter, Shipley stemmed the Anchormen run with a three pointer, but RIC rattled off six unanswered, including a steal and layup from Wager to make it a 28-25 game with 4:39 to play. Scoring slowed for the next three minutes before Shipley and Christopher each connected on buckets in the paint to lead 32-25, but Wager hit the final basket of the game to have her team within five 32-27 at the break.
- Christopher had the Huskies up seven, 36-29, with 7:43 left in the third before the Anchormen rallied with an 8-0 run to snag its first lead of the game, 37-26, with 3:23 on the clock following a pair of free throws from Nichole Ljuljic. Christopher responded for Southern Maine with a traditional three-point play igniting an 8-2 run to close the third, giving the Huskies a modest 44-39 lead headed into the fourth. Freshman Izzy Morelli (New Gloucester, Maine) had four of the Huskies' eight points in the run including an offensive rebound and a put back.
- Monahan had two free throws to start the fourth for RIC, bring her team to within a possession, but Morrelli continued her strong play off the bench and knocked down a short jumper keeping the game at a five-point spread.
- Monahan again pulled RIC to within four, 46-42 (8:30) with one of two free throws, before senior Avah Ingalls (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) scored three straight to start a 10-2 run over the next five minutes helping seal the win. Wiles canned a three at the 2:47 mark to end the Husky push for a 56-44 lead.
- Wager and Monahan combined for the next four points of the game, bringing RIC to within eight, 56-48, with 23 seconds to go, but Wiles scored one of two free throws in the closing moments for the 57-48 win.
