GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore
Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) had 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team to a 67-48 win over the Keene State College Owls in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
The no. 25-ranked Huskies earned their 16
th consecutive win to improve to 19-1 overall and remain undefeated in the Little East Conference at 11-0. Southern Maine is 9-0 at Hill Gym this season.
Wiles was 10-of-17 from the field, and went 5-for-8 from three for the game-high 25 points. Senior
Jaycie Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) added her eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 6-for-8 shooting, adding three assists. Graduate student
Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennet) added nine points, while sophomore
Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) had eight points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot. Senior
Avah Ingalls (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) filled the stat sheet with five points, seven rebounds, a career-high seven assists, and four blocked shots.
Brynn Rautiola was the lone Owl in double-figures with 12 points. Ruby Dasaro and Sydney Cassidy each had eight points.

Today's game marked the 73rd between the Keene State College Owls and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 52-20. The Huskies have won four consecutive over the Owls and are 10-2 against the Owls in their last 12 meetings dating back to the 2019-2020 season. The Huskies defeated the Owls 71-47 on the road in early January.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Cassidy and Rautiola scored back-to-back short jumpers to give the Owls and early lead 4-0 with less than 90 seconds expired in the game. After the Huskies' made consecutive turnovers to start the game, Shipley got Southern Maine on the board with a three, and Wiles and Ingals went back-to-back for buckets as part of a 7-0 run to take the lead for good 7-4 with 6:49 to play.
- KSC kept pace with the Huskies in the first quarter. Trailing 14-7 after a jumper from Christopher at the 2:19 mark, the Owls' Rautiola and Dasaro scored the final four points of the first for a 14-11 game headed into the second quarter.
- Exchanging points to open the second, USM led by a possession, 16-13, with 8:33 to play before ballooning its lead to 27-16 over the next three minutes with an 11-3 run. After Rautiola hit two free throws to keep the Owls within three, Christopher hit back-to-back threes for a 22-13 Husky advantage. Kiley Bundy hit a three of her own to answer for the Owls but Southern Maine's Cote responded with a three, and Wiles hit scored a layup off of an Ingalls' steal and assist for an 11-point, 27-16, advantage with 5:21 left in the half. Both teams were off the mark over the next three minutes, but Wiles came up big for the Huskies in the closing minutes with two three-pointers, including a dagger of a corner-three to give USM a 33-16 lead as time expired.
- Wiles stayed hot in the third as the Huskies snagged their largest lead of the game, 53-20, with 3:02 to play. Wiles scored 13 of Southern Maine's 24 points in the quarter, including the three for her team's 33-point lead. Facing a 30-plus deficit, the Owls outscored USM 10-2 in the final three minutes of the frame to trim the deficit to 25, 55-30, heading into the fourth.
- Norton and Rautiola scored back-to-back threes to start the fourth and bring the Owls to within 19, 55-36, with 7:07 to play, but Shipley scored five unanswered, including an and-one play to make it 60-36 game with just over five to go. The Huskies led by 26, 66-40, with 3:05 remaining after a three from sophomore Ali Portas (New Gloucester, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), and then settled for the 67-48 win.
Inside The Statistics:
- Southern Maine shot 42.4 percent (25-for-59) from the field and was 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from three-point range. The Huskies shot 80.0 percent from the free throw line (4-for-5). Keene State shot 29.7 percent (19-for-64) from the field, and 25 percent (8-for-32) from three. The Owls were 2-for-4 from the free throw line.
- Southern Maine had a slim 16-14 lead in points in the paint, and a 7-4 lead in second chance points. KSC won the turnover battle committing 10 to the Huskies' 19. KSC scored 16 points off of Husky turnovers and USM scored 13 off of the Owl miscues.
- Southern Maine had a 46-32 lead in rebounding, and an 8-7 lead in offensive boards.

The Huskies are then on the road for their next two games heading to Rhode Island College on February 4 (5:30 pm) and Eastern Connecticut on February 7 (3:00 pm). Southern Maine returns home on Wednesday, February 11 (5:30 pm) vs. Plymouth State University.
