Southern Maine Earns 10th Straight Victory in 81-54 Win Over UMass Dartmouth


GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Jaycie Christopher (Skowhegan, Maine) recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds along with six assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 81-54 win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Christopher was one of four Huskies in double-figures and finished the game shooting 9-for-13 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line.  Graduate student Liz Cote (Conway, NH/Kennett) added 15 points, while sophomore Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) had 14 points, four steals, three assists and two rebounds.  Senior Avah Ingalls (Hampstead, NH/Pinkerton Academy) had 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Sophomore Dakota Shipley (Bath, Maine/Brunswick) chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, and a blocked shot.
 
Melanie Demeo led UMD with 15 points, while Kaila Pruitt had 13 points, six rebounds.   Elizabeth Gresian added seven points, four boards, two assists and two steals.

Today's meeting marks the 91st meeting between the Huskies and Corsairs.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 68-22, but the Corsairs are 9-1 against the Huskies in their last 10 meetings.  Southern Maine snapped a 14-game losing streak to UMD with a 74-68 win in the regular season, but the Corsairs defeated the Huskies 94-50 in the 2025 LEC Championship game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • UMD shot a red-hot 8-for-10 from the field in the first quarter, including a 4-for-5 mark from three to trail the Huskies 21-20 headed into the second frame. Demeo had nine of her 15 in the first on 3-for-4 shooting from three.  The Huskies trailed UMD 11-8 with 5:10 to go in the quarter on a bucket from Yasmine Santos, but the Huskies scored seven unanswered on two buckets from Christopher around a Cote three for a 15-11 lead. However, UMD stayed with the Huskies as Demeo knocked down two more threes as the Corsairs outscored USM 9-6 to close out the opening 10 minutes.
  • UMD cooled in the second quarter shooting just 35.7 percent to the Huskies' 50 percent as Southern Maine took a 41-34 lead into the halftime break. The Corsairs outscored USM 5-3 to start the second and led 25-24 a minute in on a layup from Amanda Ebenezer, but USM scored four straight to reclaim the lead 28-25 on a layup from Wiles and two free throws from Christopher.
  • The Corsairs stayed within striking distance of the Huskies and trailed by a possession, 31-28, on a layup from Carly McDonald at the 6:41 mark, but Southern Maine used an 8-0 run to surge ahead 39-28 with 2:48 to play. The Huskies were 3-for-3 from the field during the run and were led by four points from Ingalls. Kaila Pruitt hit a three for UMD with 52 seconds to play in the half for a 39-34 game, but Wiles snagged an offensive board and hit the layup for the 41-38 lead at the break.
  • Southern Maine took control of the game in the third outscoring the Corsairs 20-9.  USM scored the first five points of the quarter to lead 46-34 on a layup from Shipley. Two free throws from Pruitt and a three from Gresian made it a 46-39 game with 6:52 left in the third, but the Huskies outscored UMD 15-4 to head into the fourth with a 61-43 lead.  Christopher had six of her 22 in the run, including a buzzer-beating jumper.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets to start the fourth, and Gresian hit a jumper at the 5:20 mark to have the Corsairs with 15, 66-51, but USM held the Corsairs to just three free throws in the final five minutes as part of a 15-3 run for the 81-54 final.  The Huskies were 6-for-9 from the field down the stretch and received scoring from six different players. The Corsairs were 0-for-5.
 
Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine finished the game shooting 48.5 percent (32-for-66) from the field and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the free throw line. UMass Dartmouth shot 38.5 percent (20-for-52) after opening the game shooting 8-for-10 in the first quarter.
  • The Huskies had a 41-28 lead in rebounding and a 13-6 advantage in offensive boards.  Southern Maine scored 17 second chance points. 
  • USM finished the game with 12 turnovers compared to the Corsairs' 20, and scored 24 points off of UMD miscues.  Wiles led the way with four steals and has 66 in her career.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, January 17 (1:00 pm).  The Huskies are then on a three-game road trip, heading to Thomas College in non-conference action on Tuesday, January 20 (5:30 pm), and then Plymouth State and WestConn in Little East action on Wednesday, January 21 (5:30 pm) and Saturday, January 24 (1:00 pm), respectively.  Eastern Connecticut is coached by former USM standout Mandy King '98 – King was a two-year captain for the Huskies, and helped lead Southern Maine to the 1998 National Championship game.
