Late Header From Conneely Leads Southern Maine to 1-1 Draw With Rivier

GORHAM, Maine  - Junior Liam Conneely (Weymouth, Mass.) scored in the 89th minute to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a tie in a 1-1 draw with the Rivier University Raiders in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Playing in their second game in as many days, the Huskies earned their second consecutive 1-1 draw to open the 2025 campaign.

The Records:
Rivier (0-0-1)
Southern Maine (0-0-2)

Today's game marked the first meeting between the two squads.

How It Happened:
  • Scoring in the second minute the Raiders nearly led wire-to-wire in the contest. Andrew Velasquez knocked in his first goal of the season at the far post following a well-placed corner kick service from Alejandra Quezada.
  • With most of the play in the central part of the field, Rivier led in shots 2-1 in the opening half and maintained their 1-0 lead.
  • The Huskies turned up their offensive pressure in the second half outshooting the Raiders 7-1, but Rivier goalkeeper Logan Clough made three saves on three shots on goal to keep USM off the scoreboard.  Clough made back-to-back stops in the 77th and 78th minutes, as the Huskies pressed forward.
  • Earning a corner kick with 88:26 gone in the game, junior Ahmed Al Mshakheel (Biddeford, Maine) served in a ball to the far post, and Conneely connected with his head to pull the game even with seconds remaining in the contest.

The Goalkeepers:
RU, Logan Clough (0-0-1), 90:00, 1GA, 3 Saves
SM, Gabe Wagner (0-0-2), 90:00, 1GA,  1 Saves

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine outshot the Raiders 8-3 in the contest (4-2 on goal), and both teams each had four corner kicks.
  • Conneely's goal is the fifth of his career, and the first game-winning goal of his career.
  • A transfer from Southern Maine Community College, Al Mshakheel's assist is his first of his Husky career.
