Series History:  Today's game marked the 66th meeting between the WestConn Wolves and the University of Southern Maine.  WestConn leads the overall series 48-18.  The Wolves have won the last three consecutively.

How It Happened:
  • Ahead by two, 12-10, with just over five minutes ticked off the clock, Southern Maine used a 15-4 run over the next 5:06 of action to lead 27-14.  Lausier and Whelan combined to score 13 of the Huskies' 15 points in the run capped by a layup from Lausier in transition on a feed from freshman Evans Sterling (New Sharon, Maine/Mount Blue).
  • A traditional three-point play from Gallon cut the Wolves' deficit to 10, 27-17, with 8:03 on the clock. Both teams exchanged buckets over the next 3:26, and the gap remained 10-points in favor of USM 34-24 with 4:23 until the halftime break.
  • WestConn's Nicholas Moore scored five consecutive points to half the Wolves' deficit, 34-39, but Whelan and Saunders combined for the next five Husky points to regain a 10-point lead, 39-29, with 1:19 to go in the half. The Wolves closed the first outscoring Southern Maine 5-1 led by three points from Belcher and two from Riley for a 40-34 game at the break.
  • Southern Maine stayed in front of the Wolves for a majority of the second half, and led by 12, 56-44, with 12:07 to play following a pair of free throws from Saunders and a layup from Whelan.  However, the Wolves rattled off six straight to again make it a two-possession game on a Belcher layup, 56-50, with 10:16 in the game. Lausier extended the Huskies' lead back to nine 59-50 with a three, but WestConn's Gallon answered right pack with a three igniting a 10-0 run that enabled the Wolves to lead ahead of the Huskies 60-59 with 7:09 left. Gallon scored eight of the Wolves' 10 points in the pivotal run.
  • USM inched ahead on its next possession as Lausier hit two free throws to make it 61-60 for the Huskies, but the Wolves again went on a run, 11-2, over the next 2:45 to seize a 71-63 lead with 3:30 left. The Wolves were 4-for-6 in the run, including 2-for-2 from three.
  • After an exchange of points, Lausier made it a five-point Husky deficit with another set of free throws at the 2:03 mark for a 73-68 game.  A layup from junior Diego Colon (New Braunfels, Texas) and a Saunders' and-one sandwiched around 1-of-2 free throws from the Wolves made it a three-point game, 76-73, with under a minute to play, but Gallon closed it out on the line for WestConn for the 79-73 final.
