Today's game marked the 89th meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Southern Maine leads the overall series 78-11. Southern Maine swept the 2024-2025 regular season series against the Beacons, and earned a 59-48 win in the LEC quarterfinals. The Huskies are 8-1 against UMB in their last nine meetings.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the game knotted up at 16 early in the second half, Southern Maine used an 8-0 run to create separation and take control of the game. Shipley got the Huskies started with a layup and free throw to convert the traditional three-point play. Cote made it 6-0 with a three off of an assist from sophomore Lucy Wiles (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) before Christopher gave the Huskies a 24-16 advantage with 6:46 left until halftime.
- Ashleigh Lagor stopped the USM run for the Beacons with a layup and a three from Tajeiha Madison made it a quick five-point swing with a three to pull UMB to within a possession, 24-21, but Southern Maine outscored the Beacons 11-2 the rest of the quarter to lead by double-digits, 35-23, at the half. Christopher had six of the Huskies' points in the closing run.
- The Huskies picked up where they left off in the second half scoring the first nine points of the third quarter to swell their lead to 44-23 with just under three minutes gone in the frame. Shipley had four points, while Christopher nailed a three for the ninth points of the run at 7:07 on the clock.
- Madison and Lagor responded again for the Beacons combining for seven unanswered to bring the Beacons within 14, 44-30, but yet again Southern Maine closed the quarter on a run. Freshman Izzy Morrelli (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) scored four of the Huskies eight in an 8-3 close out spurt.
- Hialeah Turner-Foster scored the first points of the fourth on the Beacons first possession, but Southern Maine ran off another seven unanswered to snag its largest lead of the game, 59-35, with 6:28 in regulation. Cote started the run with a three, and Christopher completed it with a driving layup sandwiched around a layup from junior Lita Guslens (Ikškile, Latvia).
- The Beacons made a pair of runs in the fourth to cut into the Husky lead. UMB scored an 8-0 run on 3-for-3 shooting, including a pair of jumpers from Tatiannah Fevry, making it a 59-43 game with just under five to go.
- Christopher hit a three to stop the run after an offensive rebound from Wiles only to have Lagor connect on a jumper after a steal and an assist from Jordis Tautalatasi for a 62-45 game with 3:32 to go. After the Lagor jumper, both teams went a cold from the field. Christopher made a layup on a feed from Shipley at 2:27, and Fevry scored with just 27 second to play for UMB for the 64-47 final.
