Chagnon Scores in Overtime to Lift Huskies Past Wildcats 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Graduate student Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored the 17th game-winning goal of her career 1:49 into the overtime period to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's ice hockey team a 2-1 win over the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats on Friday evening in Providence, R.I. Chagnon also assisted on a shorthanded goal by fifth-year senior Jillian Jackson (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Ontario Hockey Academy) to tie the game in the third period.

Junior Maggie Jones (St. John's, Newfoundland/Mount Academy) made 16 saves to bring her record to 5-6-0 on the season. Katelyn Cardoso took the loss for Johnson & Wales and made 26 saves.

The Records:
Southern Maine: 5-6-0
Johnson & Wales: 4-5-0

Series History:
Today's game was the 14th game between the two programs. The Huskies led the series 10-4 and have won each of the last four games. Each of the last three games have been overtime wins by the Huskies, including a 3-2 win on January 26, 2024, in which Chagnon delivered the game-winner.

The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Maggie Jones (5-6-0): 61:49, one goal allowed, 16 saves
JWU: Katelyn Cardoso (2-4-0): 61:49, two goals allowed, 26 saves

How It Happened:
  • Jones made six saves in the opening period as the Huskies outshot the Wildcats 7-6. The Huskies' defense helped out their goalie by blocking eight shots in the period. Jackson and sophomore Greta Grant (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) each blocked two shots.
  • The second period was also a scoreless affair with neither side able to break through. The Huskies controlled the flow of the action by outshooting the Wildcats 10-3 in the period, but Cardoso kept the game scoreless.
  • The Wildcats struck first 7:17 into the period with Alexia Labre cleaning up the rebound of a shot by Ashley Bergeron. However, the Huskies responded by tying the game with a shorthanded goal by Jackson after Chagnon found her with a pass to set up a breakaway. Neither team scored the rest of the way, and the teams went to overtime knotted up one goal apiece.
  • Chagnon's game-winner came after her initial shot was saved but she was able to control the rebound and fire it into the open net to give the Huskies the win.

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine led 28-17 in shots on goals, while the faceoff wins favored the Wildcats 27-18. Jackson led the Huskies with eight faceoff wins.
  • Jackson's shorthanded goal is the first of its kind for the Huskies this season.
  • Chagnon now has 48 career goals and will be looking to become just the second player in program history to reach the 50-goal milestone. She now ranks sixth in program history in career points with 71.

Up Next:
The Huskies enter the winter break with a record of 5-6-0 and a 3-2-0 mark in Little East Conference play. The team will return to action in 2026 with a road game at the University of New England on Saturday, January 3.
