The Records:
Southern Maine (3-0)
Emmanuel (2-2)

Today's game is the 14th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Emmanuel College Saints, and the first meeting since the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament – a 55-49 win for the Saints. Southern Maine leads the overall series 8-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • USM scored the first five points of the game but fell behind quickly in the first quarter as the Saints outscored the Huskies 20-6 in the final 6:15 of the quarter.  Shooting 8-for-11 from the field during that stretch, the Saints led Southern Maine 20-11 heading into the second quarter. Mitchell had eight first quarter points to lead Emmanuel.
  • The Saints doubled up the Huskies 22-11 on the opening play of the second quarter on a layup from Kaitlyn Bartash, and opened the quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 30-11 with 6:48 remaining until the halftime break.  Cote broke up the run for the Huskies sinking her first three of the game.  Cote's three started a 12-3 spurt for USM which pulled the Huskies to within 10, 33-23, with 4:20 on the clock, but the Saints ended the half on a 10-5 run to take a commanding 43-28 lead into the break.
  • Led by seven points from Shipley, Southern Maine opened the third on a 9-0 run, and cut its deficit to nine points, 49-40, midway through the third on a three from Christopher at the 5:31 mark.
  • After a minute of failed possessions from both teams, Cote drained a three on an assist from Wiles making it a two-possession game, 49-43, with 4:38 left in the third. Emmanuel responded with an 8-4 mini-run led by six points from Shea Canavan, including a three with 3:14 on the clock, to push the lead back to 10, 57-47. However, Shipley again took over scoring six of the Huskies next eight unanswered points to make it a two-point difference, 57-55, with 1:56 until the fourth quarter.  Mitchel answered for the Saints with a layup on the next possession (59-55), but this time Wiles took over as USM closed on a 7-0 run to lead 62-59 at the end of the quarter.  Wiles scored five of the Huskies' seven points, including a layup at the buzzer for the Huskies first lead since the six-minute mark of the first quarter.
  • Going 4-for-4 from the floor to start the fourth, Emmanuel rattled off 10 unanswered points to retake the lead 69-62 with 7:31 remaining in the game. Cote hit a three to make it 69-65, and kickstarted a 10-2 run for the Huskies to snag a slim 72-71 lead at the 5:00-minute mark. Wiles scored five of USM's 10 points in the run.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets over the next 2:30, and Emmanuel's Tyra Blye hit a three with 2:29 to play put the Saints up 77-76. But it was the last lead of the game for the Saints as USM scored the final 10 points of the game to win 86-77.  The Huskies took the back on a layup from Wiles on the next play (1:42), and then went 8-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch for the win. Christopher was 6-for-6 from the line for the Huskies.  Emmanuel was 0-for-2 during that run, and had a pair of turnovers.
