VTSU Castleton Defeats Southern Maine 3-1

CASTLETON, Vt. – Junior Kylee Eubanks-Hemme (Rosamond, Cali.) posted her second consecutive double-double on Saturday with game-leading 15 kills and 10 digs as the University of Southern Maine Huskies fell 3-1 to the Vermont State University Castleton Spartans on the road. Freshmen Reese Helisek (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and Taylor Joyal (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) also posted impressive numbers in the loss. Helisek recorded a game-leading 35 assists while Joyal led all players in digs with 20 to go along with eight kills.
 
Freshman Lizzy Harbester (Plympton, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) ranked second on the team in kills with nine and added two block assists and an ace to finish with 11 points. Freshman Mariah Eaton (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) also reached double figures in points with 10 on seven kills, two aces and two block assists.

Series History:
Castleton picked up their first win against the Huskies in series history and now trail 10-1 all-time.
 
How It Happened:
  • Castleton won the opening set 25-17 after starting the set on a 4-0 run.
  • Southern Maine evened the score with a 25-22 win in the second set that was aided by a 5-0 run that allowed them to take a 15-11 lead. The Huskies then withstood a large charge by the Spartans to take the set.
  • The Spartans pulled away late in the third set with a 3-0 run to go up 23-18 and closed out the set 25-19.
  • A 6-0 run by Castleton put them ahead 10-6 and help set them up for a 25-19 win to take the match three sets to one.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies led 6-2 in blocks. Freshman Scarlett Squires (Mount Desert, Maine/Mount Desert Island) recorded three block assists.
  • Castleton led 10-7 in aces with four coming from Alondra Rojas. Eaton and Helisek led the Huskies with two apiece.
  • Junior Amelia Beatty (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) finished second on the team in digs with 11.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will close out the regular season with two home matches next week. First, the team will host Simmons University on Wednesday at 7:00 pm in Hill Gym. They will then face Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday at noon and will celebrate Senior Day.
