Magid Brace, Reitchel Game Winner Leads USM Past Eastern Connecticut 3-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) scored in the ninth minute, and sophomore Makyla Magid (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) recorded a brace to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

The Records:
Eastern Connecticut (10-4-2, 5-1-1 LEC)
Southern Maine (7-10-2, 3-2-2 LEC)

Tonight's game marked 42nd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors.  Eastern Connecticut leads the overall series 31-8-3; however, the Huskies are 5-0-1 against the Warriors in their last six meetings.

How It Happened:
  • Eastern Connecticut controlled possession to open the first six minutes of play, but only registered one shot during that time from Keira Rogers. Rogers' bid was stopped by USM freshman goalkeeper Madi Cool (Essex, Mass.) in the fifth minute.
  • After a win in the midfield, sophomore Meghan Przybilla (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) drove the ball forward, and then sent in a well-paced lead ball onto the run of Reitchel on the right-hand side of the field.  Beating her defender to the ball, Reitchel took one touch in the box and then sent a far post strike to the left corner for the 1-0 Husky lead 8:11 into the game.
  • ECSU put two more shots on frame from Katelyn Herbert and Kylie Gentile in the 19th and 27th minute respectively, but Cook was able to make the stop each time.
  • USM began to pressure for another goal after the 30 minute mark. ECSU starter Alex Ignatowicz made two big saves off of bids from freshman Marie Benoit (Hallowell, Maine/Hall-Dale) and Magid in the 33rd and 34th minute to keep it a 1-0 game, but Magid was able to collect the rebound on her shot in the 34th minute and punch the ball home for a 2-0 Husky advantage, which Southern Maine took through the half.
  • The second half started quiet for the first seven minutes before Benoit again mixed things up in the box taking a shot from the left side of the goal.  With her shot blocked by an ECSU defender, Magid was able to collect the ball in front of the net and roof in her second of the game for the 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute
  • USM continued to control play and put numerous shots toward goal over the next 35 minutes. Reitchel and Przybilla each had strong attempts in the 71st and 74th minute but substitute goalie Kaeden Dublin came up big each time for the Warriors.
