Huskies Rally to Defeat WestConn 2-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Trailing 1-0 at the half, the University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey team rallied with two second-half goals to defeat the WestConn Wolves 2-1 in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
 
Freshman Maddie Niles (Benton, Maine/Lawrence) and junior Bri Townsend (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) led the Huskies offensive with one goal a piece.

Today's game marked the 19th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Western Connecticut State University Wolves. Southern Maine leads the overall series 15-4 and has won the last five consecutively.   
 
THE GOALKEEPERS:
WC: Jaden Kilmer (6-9), 60:00, 2 GA, 8 Saves
SM:  Eleanor Folsom (10-8), 60:00, 1 GA, 3 Saves
 
Defensive Saves: WestConn, Nora Tracy
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolves got on the board first taking a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute. Jaelyn Moulton banged in the goal off of a well-played assists across the circle from Miah Ruiz.  The goal came on the Warriors third penalty corner of the quarter.
  • The Huskies looked to equalize before the break but bids from Townsend and senior Taylor Leclerc (Fairfield, Maine/Lawrence) were both turned aside by WestConn goalkeeper Jaden Kilmer in the 29th minute. 
  • Southern Maine pressured for the equalizer to start the third, registering six shots and five penalty corners in the first 10 minutes.  Niles initial strike at 39:46 was cleared off the line by WestConn's Nora Tracy with a defensive save, but the rebound was able to find the back of the net for the 1-1 scoreline.
  • Townsend delivered the win for the Huskies in the 52nd minute with an outstanding individual effort, carrying the ball from midfield through WestConn's defense and into the circle before scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season. 
  • WestConn had a had a pair of strong attemps from Alyssa Montalvo late the game but the Husky defense and senior goalkeeper Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) kept Southern Maine up for the 2-1 final.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
  • Southern Maine outshot the Wolves 21-10 in the game, and had an 11-3 advantage in the second half.  WestConn led in penalty corners in the first half 4-2, but USM had eight second half penalty corners. 
  • Townsend's goal marked the fourth game-winning goal of her 2025 season.  
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday (4:00 pm) for a Little East Conference contest, and then closes out its 2025 regular season at home against Keene State on Saturday, November 1 (1:00 pm).  The 2025 LEC Field Hockey tournament begins on Tuesday, November 4.  Qualified teams, pairings, host-sites and times will be announced prior to the start of the tourney.
