Six Players in Double-Digits for Huskies

KEENE, NH  – Octavio Brito had 19 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to lead four players in double-figures as the No. 23 Keene State College Owls defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 101-84 in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gym.
 
Brito was 9-for-18 from the field earning the double-double. Nate Siow led the Owls with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, while Spencer Aronson and Wesley Odiase had 13 and 12 points each.
 
The Huskies had six players in double-digits led by 19 points from sophomore Brady Saunders (Brewer, Maine). Saunders was 7-for-9 from the field, adding three rebounds, and four assists.  Sophomore Evan Willey (Casco, Maine/Bridgton Academy) added 17 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Evans Sterling (New Sharon, Maine/Mount Blue) tossed in 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting – both Willey and Sterling contributed off of the bench for the Huskies. Graduate student Bryce Lausier (Glenburn, Maine/Hampden Academy) and junior Diego Colon (New Braunfels, Texas) each had 11 points and seven rebounds. Lausier added four assists, while Colon had three. Junior Thomas Whelan (Bronx, NY./Fordham Prep) added 10 points, five assists and three rebounds.

Series History:  Today's game marked the 133rd meeting between the Keene State College Owls and the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Keene State leads the overall series 85-48, and the Owls have won the last seven games consecutively.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Owls opened the game with an 11-0 run in the first 2:24 and never trailed en route to their ninth win in as many games in conference action.  Aronson scored five of the Owls' 11 points including the opening three of the game.
  • Colon got the Huskies on the board at the 16:56 mark, but KSC continued to pour in the points and led 20-4 at the 15-minute mark after a pair of free throws from Siow. After Aronson hit a jumper to put the Owls up 27-9 with 12:47 left in the half, the Huskies used a 22-12 run over the next 8:59 to cut their deficit to 9, 37-28. Lausier had six while Whelan and Sterling each had four points in the run. 
  • With its lead cut to three possessions, Keene State closed out the final 4:17 of the first half outscoring USM 13-9 to take a 50-37 lead into the halftime break. Lausier's layup with 24 seconds to go made it a 10-point game for the Huskeis, 47-37, but KSC's Liam Johnston nailed a three as time expired.
  • Outscoring the Owls 9-4 to start the second half, the Huskies trailed by eight, 54-46, following a three from Colon, but the Owls responded with a 27-5 push to snag a 30-point lead, 81-51, over the next seven minutes.  Brito had eight points while Odiase and Ryan Blakey each had six for the Owls in the run.
  • The Huskies used the next nine and a half minutes of the game outscoring the Owls 33-14, shooting 14-for-19 from the field, to more than half their deficit to 11 points, 95-84, but it was not enough as KSC closed the game out on a 6-0 run for the 101-84 final. Willey had 12 of his 17 points in the Huskies' run, while Saunders added 11.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine shot 45.8 percent (33-for-72) from the field in the game. The Huskies shot 52.8 percent in the second half after shooting just 38.9 in the first.  The Owls shot 45.1 (41-for-91) for the game.
  • Led by Brito's 17 rebounds, KSC had a 54-38 lead in rebounding, including a 16-5 edge in offensive boards. The Owls scored 16 second chance points.  The Owls won the turnover statistic committing just eight to the Huskies' 15, and scored 15 points off of turnovers.
