Huskies Defeated by Wolves 19-6

DANBURY, Conn. – Isabella Pota recorded eight points from five goals and three assists and was one of six players with multiple points for the Western Connecticut State University Wolves in a 19-6 Little East Conference win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. Faye Junge and Alexa Riggio each had five points with Junge recording three goals and two assists and Riggio scoring four times and assisting on a goal. Vicky Gracy had a hat trick and an assist while Madison Ratchford tied with Pota for the team-lead in assists and scored a goal as well. Colleen Crotty was the last Wolf with multiple points with a goal and two assists.
 
Junior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) had three goals and an assist for the Huskies and also had a game-leading seven draw controls. The Huskies also had goals from senior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine), senior Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) and senior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering).

Series History:
Today's game marked the 28th meeting between the two programs. The Wolves have extended their series lead to 15-13 with today's victory.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Cece Racine (3-5), 60:00, 19 goals allowed, 12 saves
Western Connecticut State: Molly Bresnahan (6-3), 60:00, six goals allowed, nine saves
 
How It Happened:
  • The first goal of the game came 1:18 into the first quarter off a strike by Riggio with an assist from Crotty. The Huskies tied the game 39 seconds later when McKenna blazed down the field and fired a shot past Bresnahan. However, the Wolves quickly scored to regain the lead and closed out the quarter on a 6-0 run to lead 7-1 heading into quarter number two.
  • The Huskies outscored the Wolves 2-1 over the first half of the second quarter with an up-goal from Rinaldi that was assisted by McKenna, who also scored on a free position shot. WestConn extended their lead to 11-3 thanks to three goals over the 2:30 of the first half.
  • WestConn extended their lead to 10 goals late in the third quarter. Pota had two goals and an assist in the quarter while Ratchford scored once and assisted both of Pota's goals.
  • The Wolves ended the game by outscoring the Huskies 3-1 over the final 15 minutes.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Wolves controlled the game with a 41-22 advantage in shots and a 15-9 lead in draw controls. McKenna's seven draw controls led all players followed by Pota and Gracy with six each.
  • WestConn led in ground balls 26-16. Bresnahan, Gracy and Katelyn Contreras each had four for the Wolves while Shanks led the Huskies with three.
  • The Huskies had a slight 8-6 lead in caused turnovers led by two apiece by sophomore Makayla Gorman (South Windsor, Conn./ Tolland) and senior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine).
  • Shanks, who broke the program record for career points on Tuesday, is now the first player in program history to reach 250 career points. Her 206 career goals are second all-time behind Jessica Knight's 209.
