Wetmore and James Reach Milestones in Season Finale Against WestConn

DANBURY, Conn. – Sixth-year senior Nick James (Portland, Maine/Deering) broke his own program record for assists in a season and senior Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine/Greely) tied James' program record for single-season goals and points as the 2024 season came to an end for University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's lacrosse team with a 28-7 loss to Western Connecticut State University. James had a goal and an assist and finished the season with 38 assists to surpass the mark of 36 that he set in 2032. Wetmore matched James' 2023 totals in goals with 47 and points with 83.
 
Benjamin Hawthorne led WestConn with four goals and three assists followed by Julian Duque with four goals and Travis Benson with three goals plus an assist.
 
Freshman Kaden Manning (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) scored twice while James, Wetmore and freshman Patrick O'Driscoll (Biddeford, Maine) each had a goal and an assist. Freshmen Owen Gaulrapp (Windham, Maine) and Iyah Lavit (Hancock, Vt./ Harwood Union) also had goals for the Huskies.

How It Happened:
  • The Wolves took a commanding 10-1 lead in the first quarter with the lone Southern Maine goal being scored by Manning. Tristan McMahon and Hawthorne each scored twice in the period and Hawthorne also had an assist.
  • WestConn outscored Southern Maine 8-1 in the second quarter thanks in part to a hat trick by Duque and two goals by Peter Traina. Lavit scored his first career goal in the quarter after collecting a ground ball and running through the Wolves' defense before firing a shot.
  • Each side scored four goals in the third quarter. The James brothers connected for the first Husky goal with Nick getting the score and Andrew James assisting. Manning scored his second goal of the game off a feed by Wetmore. O'Driscoll and Wetmore also scored. Travis Benson scored two of WestConn's goals.
  • The Wolves closed out the game with a 6-1 run in the fourth quarter.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The two teams combined for 100 shots with 75 coming from WestConn.
  • The Wolves went 34-for-37 on faceoffs led by Jon Russack-Baker who went 20-for-21 and also had a goal, two assists and 20 ground balls.
  • WestConn led in ground balls 54-15.
  • James is the first player in program history to reach 300 career points. He has 170 goals and 133 assists in his career.
  • Wetmore became the second player in program history to record 200 points. His 202 career points rank second to James as do his 115 career goals. He ranks third all-time in assists with 87.
  • The Huskies set new program records for goals (190), assists (127) and points (317) this season.
