McKenna and Shanks Score Five Goals Apiece in 17-3 Rout of Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) and sixth-year senior Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) combined for 10 goals for University of Southern Maine Huskies women's lacrosse team in a 17-3 Little East Conference win over Rhode Island College on Wednesday afternoon. Each player scored five goals and Shanks also had an assist. McKenna had another great all-around game with five draw controls, three ground balls and a game-leading four caused turnovers.
 
Sophomore Molly Black (Windham, Maine) and freshman Grace Burritt (Kennebunk, Maine) each recorded career firsts in the win. Black scored three goals for the first hat trick of her career while Burritt recorded the first points of her career with a goal and an assist. Senior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine) added two goals and junior Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran) also scored for the Huskies.

The Huskies are now 22-1 all-time against the Anchorwomen and have the last 21 games in the series.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Cece Racine (4-7), 60:00, 3 goals allowed, five saves
Rhode Island College: Giana Franco (1-8), 60:00, 17 goals allowed, 10 saves
 
How It Happened:
  • McKenna scored three times and Shanks scored twice as the Huskies got off to a 5-0 start in the first quarter before Sophie DeFlitch put the Anchorwomen on the scoreboard with just four minutes left in the quarter. Rhode Island College committed nine turnovers in the quarter with the Huskies causing five.
  • All seven of Southern Maine's shots on goal in the second quarter found their way into the back of the net. Rinaldi and Black each scored twice, and Shanks, Byers and McKenna also had goals. Three of the seven goals came on free-position shots. The Huskies dominated in time of possession and won 7-of-8 draw controls in the quarter. Racine made two saves in the stanza.
  • Hannah Marley scored the first goal of the second half to make the score 12-2 with an assist credited to Emily Marino. The Huskies scored three times in the final five minutes. Burritt set up a women-up goal by Shanks for the first point of her career. McKenna then scored once again on a free-position shot and Shanks returned Burritt's favor with an assist of her first career goal.
  • Black and Shanks each had goals in the fourth quarter and the last goal of the game was scored by Maggie Schwab with 1:08 left thanks to an assist from Marley.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies led 19-5 in draw controls led by six from freshman Eliza Pattershall (Readfield, Maine/ Maranacook).
  • Southern Maine outshot Rhode Island College 33-12 and led 27-8 in shots on goal.
  • The Huskies scored a season-high seven free-position goals going 7-for-10. McKenna was 4-for-4 on free-position shots.
 
Up Next:
The Huskies will wrap up the regular season on Saturday at 11:00 am against Vermont State University Castleton in Gorham. The team will be celebrating Senior Day prior to the contest.
