Southern Maine Splits With Keene State in Little East Action 7-3, 3-6

Sophomore Chris Quigley Has Two Home Runs, Four RBI in Doubleheader

GORHAM, Maine   –   Sophomore Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) was 4-for-8 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBI, and junior Clay Robbins (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) pitched a strong seven innings in game one to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a split with the Keene State College Owls in a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.
 
Quigley was 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair of home runs to lead Southern Maine offensively in the 7-3 win.  Robbins went 7.0 innings, scattering four hits and five walks while allowing pair of earned runs. He struck out six.
 
Series History:
Today's games marked the 100th and 101st game between the University of Southern Maine and the Keene State College Owls.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 70-27, and have won the last eight consecutively.

Game 1 – Southern Maine 7, Keene State 3
  • After a quiet first inning, Quigley gave the Huskies a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a three-run home run for his first intercollegiate home run. The Huskies had three hits in the inning, including a one-out single from senior Christian Siciliano (Shrewsbury, Mass.) to help set the table for Quigley.
  • KSC took one run back in the top of the third on a fielder's choice RBI from Otis Follet to trail 3-1, but USM responded with a pair of runs in the fifth to grow its lead to 5-1.  Siciliano had an RBI single up the middle, and senior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon Fall had an RBI single to center. 
  • Ahead 5-1, Robbins controlled the fourth and fifth innings retiring the Owls in order, including a pair of inning ending strikeouts.  KSC made it 5-2 in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI single from Evan McCue, but Quigley responded for the Huskies in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to make it 6-2. 
  • USM moved into the bottom of the seventh retaining its 6-2 lead ending the Owls' top of the seventh with a double play. Sophomore Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) added another run to the Huskies' tally, leading off the inning with a solo home run to right field for a 7-2 advantage.
  • Neither team pushed a run across in the eighth, and the Owls scored one run in the top of the ninth on a trio of singles, including a two-out RBI single base hit to right from Brendan Eaton, but the Huskies got the final out for the 7-3 win.
 
Game 2 – Keene State 6, Southern Maine 3
  • The Owls scored two runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth inning to defeat Southern Maine 6-3 in game two.  Evan Cali was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Evan McCue went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
  • Francis drove in a pair of runs for the Huskies with a solo home run in the seventh, and an RBI ground out in the eighth.

  • Douin's RBI in game one gives him a team-leading 45 on the season.  He is hitting .336 with nine doubles, two triples and 10 home runs.  Douin leads the Little East Conference in RBI and home runs.  His 45 RBI are ranked 14th in NCAA Division III this season, and his 10 home runs are ranked 29th
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine travels Saint Joseph's College on Monday (4:00 pm) for a non-conference game. The Huskies remain on the road and travel to Plymouth State on Tuesday (7:00 pm) in a Little East Conference game.
