GORHAM, Maine – Juniors
Colby Frost (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and
Anthony Mears (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) and sophomore
Jake Craig (Norridgewock, Maine/Skowhegan) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team each earned National Wrestling Coaches' Association Division III Scholar All-American honors.
To be eligible for the academic honor, wrestlers must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be either a regional place winner or a win 66 percent of their competitions with a 15-match minimum. Craig, Frost and Mears are three of 418 wrestlers from 100 institutions to achieve the status of Scholar All-American.
A three-year member of the Huskies' squad, Mears is earning NWCA Scholar All-America honors for the first time in his career. A Business Management major, Mears was honors earlier this academic year as a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete. Recently named to the 2023-2024 All-NEWA honorable mention team at 197 lbs, Mears complete a solid season for the Huskies placing seventh overall at the 2024 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship. A two-time All-Region wrestler, placing eighth as a freshman in 2022, Mears is a two-time NEWA honorable mention pick.
Now a two-time NWCA Scholar All-American, Craig earned second team All-NEWA honors after a solid sophomore campaign for the Huskies. A two-time NCAA National Championship qualifier, and a 2023 NCAA Division III All-American, Craig's bid to repeat as an All-American was cut short due to injury at the national tournament. A back-to-back All-Region wrestler at 125 lbs, Craig placed third at the Northeast Regional Championship to earn his spot in the national tourney, and finished his season with an outstanding 29-8 record in 2023-24 season. He sits at 55-12 in his career after two seasons. A Cyber Security major, Craig is also a William B. Wise Scholar Athlete.
Becoming the eighth NCAA Division III All-American in Huskies' wrestling history, Frost caps an outstanding 2023-2024 season earning NWCA Scholar All-America honors for the second time. Recently named first team All-NEWA, Frost finished the season with a remarkable 26-6 record, and is now 82-23 overall in his career. A three-time All-Region place winner for the Huskies at 149 lbs, Frost placed third in 2024, fifth in 2023 and third in 2022. A three-time All-NEWA selection, earning second team honors in 2022 and honorable mention in 2023, Frost is a two-time William B. Wise Scholar Athlete. Frost is a Health Science major.
